Reds may trade Phillips or Arroyo

07:25 AM ET 11.16 | It's telling that when asked last week if he needed to cut player payroll to balance the budget, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said "not yet." The implication is that it could happen. It probably depends on how season-ticket renewals go. I'm told that early renewals are promising. But if that trend doesn't continue, and the Reds have to slash payroll to make budget, it means they may have to trade Brandon Phillips or Bronson Arroyo.

Wow, a team might trade high salaried players. Nice news reporting FN.

Red may trade Phillips or Arroyo

Nice editing too (I think the Red should be plural)

The Reds learned last year that they still don't have anywhere close to a contending team, with 5 guys that got more than 90 starts hitting under .240 on the year. Though I fail to see how trading their ace and best all-around infielder could possibly make the Reds a better club in 2010, I've seen stranger things in baseball. Phillips would be a good fit for any number of teams, including the Cubs, Mets, Dodgers, and Nationals. Arroyo would be an even bigger enticement for the right club because the FA class of pitchers is so weak, and very few matched Arroyo's 220 innings of work in 2009 or his 15 wins (for a BAD team).

If Jocketty wants to clean up Bowden's mess and hit the "restart" button, he'd be wise to trade Arroyo, Phillips, Rolen, and Cordero now and develop a team over a 3-5 year plan. He could easily add 10-12 worthwhile prospects (including 2-3 "sure thing" kids) that way in fast order. If Uncle Walt isn't wanting to rebuild, he should fight tooth and nail NOT to trade any of those guys and fortify a decent core of guys with support... and add $5-10M to the payroll to add a legitimate RBI threat to the line-up, as wll as some solid depth behind the plate. The Reds aren't that far from being a .500 team, and will see some of their youngster s make steps in the right direction in 2010. If they want to be more than a .500 also-ran, I'd implore the Jock to hit the restart button and get in some kids with game.

Well if they're gonna trade one of them, make it Arroyo. He's too unpredictable, too hot and cold. If he's ever going to succeed he needs a nice spacious outfield behind him, because that bandbox of a stadium in Cincinnatti makes Yankees Stadium look like the Roman Colosseum.

Jocketty went after Rolen so why would he trade him?

He also had a couple of Emmy-caliber performances on Perfect Strangers, so he's got that going for him too, which is nice.

Then again they may not.

They don't have Little League dimenions down the foul lines........

So what if these two are on the block, does anyone really want them anyway?

November 16, 2009  03:54 PM ET

Yankees should take a hard look at trading for Phillips, (Melky & Kennedy?). Then use Cano as trade fodder for Halladay or contact SF about Cain or Lincecum. Sign Damon for two years, and hope that Crawford doesn't sign long term with Tampa. Not only do we need outfield help, but the line up also needs upgrading. Damon and Jeter will both be on the downhill side of 36 by next year... not the ages you really want your lead-off and #2 hitters at.

Jocketty went after Rolen so why would he trade him?

Because Rolen's done. That shoulder is hanging on by a thread at this point, and he's had various other odds and ends injuries for the past 5 years or so. Rolen has zero power left. He might hit for a good average, but that's about it. Realistically Walt shouldn't have gone after him in the first place. The least he can do is try to salvage something.

I don't see why they would dump Phillips. He's a .276 career hitter with CIN. The man is pretty much a lock for a 20-20 season (plus a 30-30 season). He always happens to be a pretty good defender at 2B. He also happens to pretty cheap with 2 yrs., $17.75 M left on his contract. The Reds hold a $12 M club option on him in 2012. Even if they don't exercise it, I'd say that's pretty good value for a 20-20 2B who also plays good defense.

Arroyo may also be kept. He currently is under contract through 2010 at a $11 M salary. Then there's a $11 M club option for 2011. I think they should at least keep him through the first half of the season (depending on whether CIN is contending or not). Innings eaters are really valuable nowadays. Arroyos has pitched at least 200 innings ever since he came to the Reds in 2006. That's valuable.

Phillips: not gonna trade.

Arroyo: might trade in the middle of 2010. If they're contending, then the Reds will hold onto him for that season.
