Turkoglu almost joined Suns

07:14 AM ET 11.16 | Steve Nash and Joe Johnson in the backcourt and Amare Stoudemire, Shawn Marion and Hedo Turkoglu up front. It sounds like an NBA "Where Amazing Happens" commercial cast from four teams, or maybe even an All-Star collection if Turkoglu ever gets his credit. It nearly was the Suns' 2004-05 starting lineup. The Suns, after deciding Kobe Bryant could not be wooed, struck fast in free agency by landing Nash. They wanted to pair him with Mehmet Okur. When Okur received a $50 million deal from Utah, Phoenix turned its focus to Turkoglu. Turkoglu was in Phoenix nearing an agreement with the Suns when they decided to break.

Wow, are things that bad in Phoenix when the local paper has to dream "what if" about something five years ago.

It must be rough having the best record in the NBA at 9-2.

They still would have lost to the Spurs cos D'Antoni's style of coaching wouldn't get you anywhere in the playoffs. His teams just won't have the type of defense discipline needed to win deep into the playoffs. Now I'm not saying he's a bad coach for the Knicks. It's a different situation given that the Knicks aren't going anywhere for two years so having a coach that makes the game exciting is good as it will put fans in their seats...

Who cares.

They've had the best record before. Doesn't matter! Couldn't have won a championship then, just like they can't now. With so many guys NOT playing defense, the best they'll muster now is a second round EXIT!!!

They always look great against the field during the season, but when the playoffs start, you can't hide the lack of defense!

I second-

That being said- after watching Melo mature last year-
If Amare has ANY semblence of heart.....his light switch will click on

I remember Duncan going over to congratulate Amare for hard fought series. I don't think the Spurs thought it was a done deal as everyone seems to be saying now.

ZZZZZ - WTF......? So the point is...?

we're talking 2004 here., who ever wrote this needs to find a new job.

The Suns also had Joe Johnson, Rajon Rondo, Rudy Fernandez, and Marcin Gortat. Maybe after the season is over, teams will have time to focus on if, coulda, woulda. Right now, the Suns are busy trying to keep what they have going. Another asinine thread from the Arizona Republic.

Can we also add Luol Deng and Nate Robinson to this list?Anyway, you are right. The Suns had a lot of players who COULD have been in Phoenix.

I forgot about Deng. Phoenix traded him to Chicago. What did they get in return?

Agreed, past is the past.
Could play the "what if" game on the Rap's too:
Marcus Camby, TMac, VC...

He cares so much more about offense, he never figured out good positioning, or at least on a great level.

He used to rely on athleticism before the knee injuries and never seemed to figure out how to transition.

Bro Turk in Phoenix would have helped the Suns perimeter options.
