10:55 AM ET 11.19 | Two of the U.S. Under-17 national team's top prospects are inching closer to European moves, while a third is edging closer to an MLS deal. Manchester City and Real Madrid have stepped up their bids for U.S. Under-17 midfielder Luis Gil, while Under-17 striker Jack McInerney is being courted by Hertha Berlin and Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem, sources have told SBI. While Gil and McInerney could be headed abroad, one American U-17 who could be close to staying home is forward John Agudelo, who has been offered a contract by the New York Red Bulls. As a product of the Red Bulls Academy, Agudelo is eligible to sign directly with the club rather than going through the MLS Draft.

erm, i might be off, but im pretty sure the rumor is Man CITY and Madrid, not United.... even Ives says it

Gil is going to be a solid prospect... his style would be better suited in Spain though... i wish the kid the best and hope he continues to grow as a player... but at 16 its the best time for him to go abroad

dont let the U17 WC fool you about Jack Mac... kid has a nose for the goal... reminds me alot of TightShirt Twellman... if TT stayed in europe theres no telling how good he'd have been... Jack Mac could very well turn into a solid option up top...

Agudelo really impressed me with his limited minutes in the last game of the WC... he looks so composed and could very well find himself in a good situation signing GA through Redbulls academy...

would be great if we can get gil in with Madrid, if nothing else than to show that a huge club is seriously looking at A US kid. but i wish them both the best of luck. though the other guy, McInerny, may want to rethink Hertha. he should ask bryan arguez how life at the club is going, seeing as they will get relegated

to be fair, Hertha has attempted to get Arguez a loan deal for over a year..... not to mention Bryan is simply too inconsistent to use as an example... its like he alternates good-bad-good-etc...

as for relegation, i am unaware of bundesliga standings, but what's the likelihood that if they do get relegated they'd be back next season??

dunno. htye got rid of management last year and new guys came in. they lost a lot of crucial players, which to me says something about the stability and direction of the club. they went on a 10 game skid to start the season. fired their coach, and the new guy isnt that great. so it's not looking too great. which sucks

So how is Manchester United involved in this story?

Might Gil be our first real superstar? Best youth player (and most mature) I've seen come out of the US in a long time....

Hmm... Too soon to tell. I'm not willing to but any sort of burden on a teenager. We saw how that worked out with Freddy Adu. Get him in a club with a strong youth system and let the chips fall in the salsa or something like that.

They're sticklers today about calling it IMG these days.... If you say Bradenton they kick you in the shins... Seriously.

But, yeah, that would be the first "star" to come out of IMG since.....uh.....hummmmm......uh......Landon Donovan, 1999.

Beasley WAS a star in the making. Gooch MIGHT be. All class of 1999.

Convey looked like it, and then didn't....(1999)

Remember when Alex Yi was going to go to Europe and become something (1999)...

Eddie Johnson? Sad story (class of 2000)

Heath Pearce (hold your laughter) IMG class of 2000.

Freddy Adu (someone mentioned) who knows (class of 2003) along with Szetela.

Michael Bradley turned out pretty good (2003)--and who knows maybe Robbie Rogers has more blossoming to do (I hope)...(2003)

Spector (2003) might still....

Altidore (2004/2005) perhaps--he's in a bit of a slump, me thinks.

Eric Lichaj--will Aston Villa give the kid more time? (2004/2005)

Jack McInerney maybe (2008)?

November 19, 2009  01:41 PM ET

Eh, not to rain on the kid's parade, but I wouldn't put too much stock in the Madrid link. Although we all know that Madrid buys from anywhere on the globe, candidates for the Castilla are almost exclusively Spanish. Look at their current roster (only 4 from outside Spain).

the clip is from Ives, but this is not a new rumor.... its been out since late last week at least...

hence why i said the rumor states... and then lists Ives as also saying it
