07:09 AM ET 11.21 | Say hello to the kinder, gentler Stan Van Gundy. These days, he might even pet the egos of his sensitive Orlando Magic like "little puppies." Long a glass-half-empty type, the Magic coach is known for his tough love with players and keep-it-real attitude with the media. No more, Van Gundy says. Well, no more for now. After learning his players had tired of dreary, Van Gundy has pledged to cut the negativity.

Uh huh.

November 21, 2009  09:17 AM ET

on one hand- if the players crack under a coaching 101 ploy
what does it really say about them....

On the other- they are clearly a top team- do they really need to
be treated as if they're nobodies ?

well, negative or not, the man had success in Miami. He had success last year, and they are off to a great start again now!! The man must be doing SOMETHING right??
Dwight needs to cut down on whining and just play!! And who are the other players on the roster having an issue with being called out?? Carter? Jeez he's as brittle as glass. Lewis has hardly played. Nelson is hurt AGAIN. And the rest have no creds to **** about anything. So its basically just Howard whining again!!
Just play already!! Let the coach do what he thinks is best for the team!! if it doesn't work, the owners will move him anyway!! So S T F U and play!!!!!

If SVG has an aura of negativity, I hope Don Nelson inherits a few of those and start winning games!

Obviously it worked last night as they beat their top rivals at home.

I have already predicted a disappointing season from the Spurs - I mean you can hear the crepitus in their frontcourt's knees from the nosebleeds.

I've touched on this but I am now declaring that the Celtics championship dreams are in deep trouble - mostly due to Kevin Garnetts decreased production. He is only providing 13.5 ppg, 7.6 RPG and 2.4 APG. A long way from the 20 10 and 5 guy we all knew and loved and frankly not even all-star worthy.

Rondo's scoring average has dipped, he's hitting 20% from 3 and he's hitting 25% from FT! 25%!!!! And he's only taken 16 all year. Not brilliant playmaking IMO. Maybe all the hype got to his head? Or maybe he wasn't ever that great.

Big Baby's return will be desperately needed - they are thin after Wallace, Perkins and KG, letting Powe go might have been as poor a decision as losing Posey.

But as mentioned before their biggest problem is KG, he does not look like the same player a before...his knee seems to continue to hinder him and hopefully can hold up through the entire season.

Sorry for going off-topic but another two threads of GS and NYK - gotta try and jumpstart the conversation somewhere.

I think Boston is on cruise control
Old teams simply cannot play hard 82 games-
thats why teams like Portland, Atl can have GREAT regular
seasons but get beat in the playoffs-

(good) Younger teams play hard, where as you're getting like
75% out of veteran teams during the season.....once the playoffs
come (good) vet teams know how to turn it on

No way though this celt team has a 2-3 year window
2 tops

You have no idea what you're talking about....

KG DOES look haggard...no question. Watching him play against Orlando was painful...I swear he hobbled down the court, and guess what, he still went like 16/9. You know who does look good? Wallace, who they picked up with KG's Mount Rushmore looking knee firmly in mind; you also have Allen, House, Pierce shooting lights out and Rondo is avg almost a trip-dub a game. for as long as KG lasts, he'll still produce, and Boston is, and still will be, a dangerous team with/without KG. All of these assessments are, no pun intended, knee jerk.

November 22, 2009  02:30 AM ET

BTW, they didn't get rid of Posey, he left in FA. It's not really like they could afford him right away, not for what NO offered him, they had just picked up KG's big ass contract and Allen.

Van Gundy understands the reality of the season, that is:

1 - the number 1 seed belongs to the Magic and that might make all the difference in the world come playoff time

2 - the Celtics and Cavs have serious roster issues with Garnett, Rondo and Shaq and Delonte West

3 - the Hawks are creeping up on the big three in the east, and are going to SHOCK! somebody in the playoffs. Joe Johnson wont settle this year

Orlando has the talent, and the players to get the number 1 seed and get back to the Finals. He understan that if they dont, it is a matter of coaching. Nelson being down shouldn't be a huge deal considering he didn't play a huge part of them getting to the Finals last year.

Orlando is the team in the east that has improved the most talent-wise. They SHOULD be running away with the thing, but if they wait too long Shaq and Lebron, or Joe Johnson or the Celtics may just take it away from him. Maybe Shaq was right...Maybe SVG is panicking because he understands whats at stake...

November 22, 2009  11:57 AM ET

now i only saw the magic in the finals last year....but it struck me that van gundy was yelling a lot more than seemed necessary. i remember thinking that he wasn't exactly setting a tone of confidence.

November 23, 2009  08:46 AM ET

He's going to lose his job if he don't turn it down. Once the players stop playing hard for you as a coach, your pretty much done in the NBA. He one of the few coaches that reprimand his players for every little thing they do on the court. He should try the Phil Jackson approach, coach when you have practice and mentor during the games.
