Allenby critical of American players

09:05 AM ET 11.21 | A reporter asked Robert Allenby why more American players don't play international events. You can almost hear the angel and devil arguing across his shoulders. "You know what, I've got to word this right so I don't get into trouble, because I'm good at getting myself into trouble," Allenby said. Did he word it right? Sure, if he meant to say that American players are spoiled and that PGA Tour courses are dull. Common enough opinions, but not usually heard from a Tour pro. Here's his answer: "You know, Americans play for so much money, and when you've got a purse where $1 million, a million plus, is first prize, not to say that they are spoiled, but it's a little bit that way. It's like, well, why would I want to travel, when I can make a million bucks instead of going to Europe and only making $500,000 or $600,000?"

Good job,. When you play a sport for a profession, I guess it makes sense to play the tourny's that pay, no? Even if you don't get first, golfers like Allenby could still rake a good amount of money, compared to the rest of the field in overseas competition.

If you want to travel. Just win your million dollar purse and then travel all you want. Last time I checked, a job was make as much money as you possibly could.

Sounds like he's jealous of those PGA purses.

Doesn't he have a PGA card? Quit whinning and play on our tour.

so let's just dummy down the Tour with substandard players, cancel all those multimillion dollar ad contracts that companies fall all over themselves to pay the U.S. Tour, and put a couple of trick shots on every course. Then he'll be sniveling that he just can't beat those American kids at putt-putt.

I'm surprised at the popularity of golf as a spectator sport. It's a non-atheletic sport.

I was about to rip Allenby before I read the quote, the headline is typical Truth and Rumors hyperbole. Where is he critical of US players, it is the truth and common sense. Why would you go to Europe and play for less money? Most players only play an event to prep for the Open, and the Open. Tiger and Phil play because over there because they can get 2-3 million appearance fee money, and others play because of sponsors. Its good business. The European Tour had to reduce their end of season purse because of the economy, and their best player is going to play in the US this year (McIlroy)

Hey that was first-rate.

I'd include football as well.

Dumbest sport known to man.

If the courses are dumbed down, then why are so many international players wanted to play them? Oh yea, for the money!

So according the Allenby, US players should leave behind big time winnings, travel half-way around the world, eat strang food, and get less money. Good logic!
