Hasselbeck, Bulger to Vikings?

08:59 AM ET 11.22 | If Brett Favre doesn't return, the Vikings' best options, other than internal QBs Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, could be veterans Matt Hasselbeck, who'll start against Minnesota for Seattle today, and Marc Bulger of the St. Louis Rams. Either probably could be had for a third- or fourth-round draft pick.

Hasselbeck would fit nicely into that system, but McNabb would fit better. Plus, Philly is ready for a change to Kolb.

I can't see Bulger or Hasselbeck being effective there. I also think it's an inevitability that Favre will sink into mediocrity. Vikes have had a strong start, but I think it's going to end on a disappointing note for them.

I'm saving these negative predictions regarding Favre for the end of the season. Just waiting to see if anyone mans up about being wrong. Or if I have to admit to being wrong, which could be the case in the event of injury, but otherwise I'm pretty sure Favre and the Vikings are going a long way into the playoffs. Sadly, if he should happen to get injured, all you Favre haters will claim he's faking the injury or got the injury because he's 40, even though a number of QB's have been injured already this year, like Hasselbeck and McNabb and Pennington. Seems like that guy can't win for losing. But, wait, the Vikings are 8-1 and leading their division by 3 games. :) Enough said.

November 22, 2009  10:11 AM ET

Wow.....then when the Vikes move to Hollywoodland....Hassellbeck can become the 2nd coming of Terry Bradshaw

November 22, 2009  10:14 AM ET

Yeah, another sports "certainty": Favre will sink into mediocrity. Favre will stay retired. Favre is too old. Favre throws interceptions. Favre can't throw the long ball. Those that say he CAN'T, just give him more incentive to prove that he CAN.

Yes, they are 8-1, but have they played anybody of substance, and won?

The Age of Sage - it's only a matter of time.

It still amazes me that so many people want to see Favre go down.....I don't think he will unless to major injury because the Vikes don't have to play him every down in order to win....I can see the consecutive starts coming to an end.....but I can also see Brett leading the Minnesota to an SB victory....

Then sinking into a comfortable retirement.....mediocrity is not a word he's familiar with!!!

I'm not a big fan of Bart. I will "man up" and admit he has played well so far this season, far better than I expected. Much football left to be played.

Well, they did play the Steelers.

Oops. Just being silly. The Vikings have played well this season, the only thing holding them back in the past has been their QB play. This is a good team.

November 22, 2009  10:59 AM ET

Yeah, no problem. I mean, Seattle doesn't need a quarterback or anything.

The same thing could be said about the NFC's other "elite" team, the New Orleans Saints. Minnesota's opponents so far are 29-52 (36%), while New Orleans' opponents are only slightly better at 33-50 (40%). We're seeing that a lot in the last few seasons: the teams that dominate in the regular season have easier schedules (based on the current year, not the previous year), then struggle in the playoffs. That's why we haven't had a match-up of two 1 or 2 seeds in the Super Bowl since 2005.

The difference to me is Drew Brees in training camp working with his squad from day one and blowing teams out until the last few weeks vs. Brett Favre late to the party and still trying to put it all together. My hope as a Vikings fan is that the Saints have already peaked, and the Vikings will hit their stride sometime around the playoffs.

Seattle could just draft Sneed with their top 10 pick...that wouldn't be so bad

Drafting a QB in the first round is a crap shoot. Do your homework. For every Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, or Joe Flacco, there are dozens of Ryan Leaf's, Heath Shuler's, or Akili Smith's. Not to mention JaMarcus Russell. Better to build other parts of your team with top draft picks.

Oh f%#%. Does anyone else see another summer of recycled threads "Favre hasn't made a decision - yet."?

November 22, 2009  11:39 AM ET

The Vikings have played 9 games. There are still 7 games to be played in the regular season. Why are we talking about this?

Beating GB twice and Baltimore once isn't enough for you? The only team that has beat them so far this year is the powerhouse Steelers.

CowboyDave, you are a good man and a very good football fan with a great deal of worthwhile knowledge. :) I always enjoy reading your comments, even when we disagree.

Brett Favre will play one more season and then hang 'em for real. The Vikes will lose to the Saints in the NFC championship game. He'll be close enough to taste the Superbowl, and that will bring him back for another year.

That said, the Vikes need to start grooming a replacement. A lot of teams are looking to trade down from those first-round picks, so Minnesota (LA?) should give some thought to trading up. Right now, they need to be scouting good quarterbacks, though. Drafting isn't about the college records; it's about the quality of the athletes.
