Yankees, Red Sox to fight for Lackey?

08:43 AM ET 11.22 | What will the superpower Yankees and Red Sox pull off in the coming weeks? John Lackey could be a key figure in both teams??? plans. If the Sox acquire him, it would allow them to package Clay Buchholz in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez or Miguel Cabrera, if he becomes available. Buchholz is the chip most teams want in a megadeal. Then the Sox would try to acquire another decent starter or a rehab guy like Ben Sheets as protection.

Keep Buchholz

November 22, 2009  09:02 AM ET

Lackey is going to be a Texan and that is all there is to it......

November 22, 2009  09:08 AM ET

WHy give up a pitcher like Buchholz, he's very good, will be great soon and he's like 15 yrs old, lakey is not old but not young either. Buchholz could be the guy for many years.......Damn sox have become retaaadid

November 22, 2009  09:13 AM ET

I mean the sox must resolve the LF issue first, no ?
and again- why give up prospects for Gonzalez when you
have Youk and dont 'need' him right now.....

Yanks & Sox - IMO won't overpay for Lackey-
I see the Mets making a big offer- since they NEED a #2

November 22, 2009  09:14 AM ET

epstein vs cashman? rules or no-holds-barred?

November 22, 2009  09:19 AM ET

doesn't make sense at all... both teams have more, no way more starting depth, than probably any other team in the league right now and youth in their farm systems... jmo

November 22, 2009  09:39 AM ET

Lackey is garbage. He looked great in the first round of the playoffs, but Boston couldn't hit slow-pitch softball at that point, so that really tells you nothing. Anyone who pays this guy for more than a 1-year deal is an idiot.

Agree-
granted you can never have 'too much' pitching-
but the Yanks have made HEAVY investments in Joba & Hughes
Andy will likely come back and they're going to want to see if
Wang can still throw-
Boston could probably use him more- can't count on Wake or Dice
to play a full year.......

But neither 'needs' to over-spend to get him (not that they know
what that word means) when they have other issues - like LF

lol...how do you figure?

ps you're the ONLY one that figures that.
he is ABSOLUTELY the #1 FA pitcher on the market
(granted it's a weak SP market)

I think the Sox can count on Dice to be around for the 162 this year. There is no WBC for him to throw his arm out in, and supposedly he's on a very tightly controlled workout schedule this off season. Now if they can just get him to lose that habit of having one inning each game where the roof caves in.

Wake is another story. Hopefully the surgery fixes him up, but at his age...you're right, he can't be counted on for the full year. If the Sox can get Lackey, great, but I wouldn't throw ridiculous money for him, and it's probably going to take that to get him.

Weak market pretty much sums it up. I wouldn't mind seeing the big goober on the Sox, but I certainly wouldn't give him the long term, max dollar contract he's going to get this year.

Lackey is probably one of the ten best starters in baseball. Certainly top fifteen. He's not one of the elite starters, but he is in the second group with guys like Josh Beckett.

I mean with the sox & yanks- money really isn't a big deal
it's just the years....he has been hurt the last couple- and
I know witht he Yanks- just can't see Cash giving him a 4-5
year AJ-like deal when they have AJ & cc signed for so long
- and when tehy want Joba and Phiol to be a part of the rotation
going forwards (whether that's mart or not)

As far as the sox- I see him more needed there cause after
beckett & lester- there are long-term questions

not sure about top 10-

But point is you're right- he'd ba a #1 starter on MANY teams
and if he's you're #2- you're in fine shape.....
which is why the Mets NEED to make him a BIG offer-
they, more than any other team NEED him
(unless they traade for Halliday)

Yeah, he's in that group when Beckett has a down year

The Yankees are willing to overpay and the fact that they had to go with three starters in the World Series.... for which Yankee fans savaged Girardi.... shows the weak point in their team....

let me clarify-
overpaying- obviously means NOTHING to the Yanks & sox-
it's just $$$ in a non-capped sport

My issue is the YEARS-
I don't see cash giving lackey more than a 3 year offer cause
they've already committed serious years in 2 guys -
it would be bad business (IMO) to commit that much years in 30+
year old pitching- especially when Lackey has been hurt the
last 2 years

where as the sox- don't have that issue- they have nothing
locked up long term - though Beckett is coming up
THEY need him more than the yanks
and they might overpay/give him more years than the yanks

QUOTE:

Lackey is very equivalent to Burnett.....

I don't see that-

Lackey is MUCH more consistent than AJ-
& Burnett - if on- has better stuff-

Yes in age going forwards- similar
but again- that's why I wouldn't want BOTH on my roster
for 4 -5 more years...there's too much risk in older pitching

- of course the Yanks can overcome that cause money is no object

November 22, 2009  11:18 AM ET

Wouldn't mind seeing Lackey in a BoSox uniform, but not at some super-inflated price because he's the top FA this year. He's been a good pitcher the last couple of years, but not outstanding. 24 & 27 starts, ERA around 3.80, 11 & 12 wins. I wouldn't go anything like $85M-$90M over 5 years for him.

I think someone is going to overpay for him.

Which seems to be every other year, at best.
