Rumors surround Fire coach

07:00 AM ET 11.23 | Chicago will soon make a decision whether to offer Coach Denis Hamlett a new contract. The guess here is that he will not return. The craziest rumor I heard was Hamlett will be let go and Jesse Marsch, a former Fire regular, retires at Chivas USA and immediately steps into the Chicago coaching role (a la Jason Kreis at RSL). Just a wild, unfounded rumor that was quickly dismissed by Insider contacts.

think dynamo made mention of a rumor closest to the one listed above... believe he called Preki to coach and Marsch to assist....

fire need a shake up, klopas and marsch have a history, so the idea isnt too outrageous

November 23, 2009  08:50 AM ET

Jesse Marsh could probably play a couple more years. he still looks good out there....

November 23, 2009  09:55 AM ET

wasnt he injured for a decent portion of this past season??

always liked marsch...

With the copycat nature of sports franchises and RSL's title with Kreis as coach last night, their hiring Marsch would not be a surprise. They're from a similar mold.

klopas and marsch know each other quite well....

Klopas will find the talent, and Marsch will play them.... HOPEFULLY we dont see our new coach playing players out of position.... Rolfe as a RM.... Blanco as a forward (IMO most dangerous in the CM position with Pause cover his defensive roles)... Thorington as a Dmid?? all outrageous moves.... Fire would have won SS if we played this:

--------Rolfe-------------Bmb-----------
Pappa-------Blanco--------Thorington
---------------Pause---------------------
make shift defense due to injuries
---------------Busch----------------------

Exactly! Same line up and set up I was thinking about......

You'd think the Fire would be better but they had some Soumare turmoil plus international play sapping the roster plus dependence on some old attackers who may not be 100% most nights. I think their offseason personnel choices -- who replaces Soumare, Rolfe, Blanco, etc. -- will be more important to their continued success. Personally, I'd go a little younger with the roster, which has some good talent.

Bears reminding that Blanco is gone to Veracruz/Mexico until at least the World Cup and perhaps for good.

Don't know if it's copycat or not, but MLS is seriously moving into its second generation of veteran players. There's been enough cross pollination with recycled coaches and successful college coaches making their run in the league - so it's inevitable that a "former professional" culture starts to descend just as a matter of evolution.

This next generation of coaches - with Kreis being among the first - is where the league will finally forge itself an identity, built largely on those former players who were not stars but played the game long enough to have earned their stripes. Look at any sport in any league and that's usually from where the best coaches emerge and these are the guys who stamp an identity on their league.

The Hamlett decision depends on the Fire's idea of how to proceed. If they are rebuilding and considering a coaching change, it might be OK to change coaches and let the new coach shape the rebuilt team in his image.

But it's worth noting that Hamlett has kept the Fire in consistent playoff competitiveness, and there is the risk that the begged-for replacement is actually a step backwards. Like going from Sampson to Gullit and Yallop in LA. Choose wisely.

Agreed. I didn't make it clear that I see this as a very good thing.

Then why legitimize it by recognizing it?

i wouldnt give DH too much credit... he had one of the most talented and deepest rosters in the league to use....

there is no way that the past 2 yrs with the players we had that we didnt come away with some form of hardware... he wouldnt be receiving nearly as much heat if he were to have won something as simple as the Superliga... however, he's won nothing in 2 yrs... being competitive with our roster was a given... even our injuries in the back line were over played, b/c our "make-shift" defense let in fewer goals in the 2nd half of the season compared to the 1st half starters....

our team was deep and we have NOTHING to show for it.... we will have a new team and its high time we have a new coach... Klopas and DH arent seeing eye to eye... DH and Hauptman arent on good terms... and it seemed every problem stemmed from DH (and players have stated the awkwardness in the locker room b/c of it)....

Fire will not wait half a season to get a DP back, thats too much cap space going unused for over half a season... not to mention theres no guarantee how much he'll play when he'd return...

no, Fire will move on and Klopas will find the next DP....

Actually they're just repeating what Goff said on his own Insider and in his own tweets from Seattle over the week. I had the same reaction: "tell me when you've got it right." I guess it's another sign that the game is growing up when we've got journalists competing to be first with the rumour mill - just like they do in Europe. LOL

b/c much like Ives, Goff still prints things he hears on the grapevine... some things are accurate, some are merely rumors...

its the obvious one.... but DH didnt trust blanco's defensive ability (or lack there of).... but to be frank, he wouldnt need to.... Thor is a hustler and gets up and down that field to cover.... and what would be wrong with having the likes of Rolfe, Pappa, Blanco and BMB all available up top to receive the clearance or distributions?? i have faith in our backline as well as Busch... DH went TOOOOOOOOO f-cking defensive for our roster

A very good thing. What I liked a great deal about Kreis last night - and I was watching him close to see if he's got "it" - is that he not only outcoached Arena (everything LA did with its tactics and subs was done to counter what RSL did) but also he resisted the notion of playing it safe past the 30th minute. He stuck to the same attacking formula and spreading the ball wide to exploit the Galaxy's problem with playing the game on the flanks. Lots of switches, held possession and made them chase for periods of the game that wore them out in the end.

My concern about MLS coach hirings of late is not particularly that they are not hiring former players as much as they should (or MLS coaches, or college coaches, or foreign coaches), but that they seem to be recycling lately. Arena, Yallop, Osorio, Preki, etc. shuffle to the next spot like musical chairs. Or they hire an assistant. I'd prefer to see a little risk taking in the manner of Hyndman. If it doesn't work then we move to another guy. But at least we don't stagnate.

Well, we've got Kreis and Preki in jobs already. Richie Williams has had his name attached to NJRB and DCU, now Marsch. With two more clubs coming up in 2011, plus the fickle nature of clubs with their managers, it makes sense to see a lot of former players being put into manager and front office jobs.

I've known Kreis since he was a high school player--none of his success is surprising at all.
