Leafs-Hawks pondering trade?

07:32 AM ET 11.23 | The buzz around the Air Canada Centre Saturday night was not entirely centred on the Leafs snapping a five-game losing streak with a shootout win over Washington. There was also a strong sense there could be some changes coming soon - a sense helped by the presence in the press box of Chicago Blackhawks assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. The Hawks are mulling new contracts for three of their potential free agents - Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Duncan Keith. The club, like any other, has cap considerations, and economics dictate the Hawks can't sign all three without shedding at least one of their existing, big dollar contracts. Leafs GM Brian Burke is said to be seeking draft picks to compensate for the three high-round picks surrendered in the Phil Kessel trade with Boston.

Brian Burke.....that wheeling, dealing, son of a gun

November 23, 2009  08:47 AM ET

Burke wants a top player and draft picks? For what?

Wouldn't it make more sense for Chicago to find a trading partner that actually has some talent to give them?

November 23, 2009  08:52 AM ET

What does Brian "the dreamer" Burke have to offer? The Air Canada Centre?

November 23, 2009  09:13 AM ET

The word is Burke is going to get Brent Sopel and a pick and Chicago will get a player to be named later and 'Cap Relief' so they will be able to sign Keith, Toews, Kane etc...

any idea who "the player to be named later" could be

Are you sure Burke isn't just "seeking" a job in Chicago...

Sympathy. He hopes that it plays on the hearts of other GMs.

I have to say I did enjoy the Leafs win over the Capitals the other night. ;)

Money you idiots money. he can take a high salary player from Chicago and give little if nothing back except cap room. Do you people even think before you post or are you just that stupid.

Brent Sopel has a dirty mullet.

And Burke damn well better get some draft picks.

November 23, 2009  10:29 AM ET

Does Toronto really need another D-man? They need a top flight center or top 6 forwards more than they need another D-man.

Most likely their 2nd rounder. Definately not a 1st.

My goodness.....sounds like someone is a little grumpy this morning. But you broke your 5 game losing streak this weekend! That's something to go on...right?

4 wins in 21 games will make anyone grumpy.

Trade Hossa for a case of Molson

If they are in bad enough trouble Toronto could take on high salary and get a #1 for a bag of pucks.

Haven't we heard that before? He was gonna take Malone and St Louis if the Bolts gave him Hedman. That would have been very nice of him....... That ploy does not work for top grade talent no matter what you Leaf guys might think!!

Either someone on the Marlies or a player on the Leafs whose contract ends at the end of the year.

Thank You!
Was wondering if anyone had a clue!

Actually, any Leaf fans I know (including myself) don't give a rats behind how many wins they get this year. I think we've come to grips with the fact that they're rebuilding.

Again though...he's not trying to obtain 'top grade talent'. He's trying to get draft picks by telling the other teams he'll take their obscene contracts off their hands because he has cap space - but only if they throw in a draft pick. He doesn't care what player - just looking for the draft pick, and has the cap room to take on their big contracts they can't afford.
