Will Penguins re-sign Gonchar?

08:07 AM ET 11.23 | It seems unlikely that the Penguins would be willing to match the $5 million per season Sergei Gonchar is earning now, but almost certainly will be very interested in keeping him. Gonchar is in a situation that obviously has worked well for both parties, so he might have to choose between remaining in it or going elsewhere for more money.

2 yrs, $7.5 mil. Do it!

If not the KHL will be calling!

I think that is a fair deal for both parties. Gonchar is one hell of a D-man, but the Pens can't and shouldn't sign him for much more than that, and then have to sign Letang as well. Not to mention, Gonch is on the "wrong side of 30," and has sustained his share of injuries in the last couple of years. Can he get $5 Mill with another team? Maybe. Will that team be a Cup contender? Probably not. Not to mention, with Alex Go playing as well as he is, and Letang getting better, the Penguins can make the argument that they do not have to pay Gonch more $4 Million a year.

Goligoski's rapid development into a top-notch D-man has been a nice story this year. Hoping that he can maintain that offensive instinct, while remembering that he is a defenseman first *cough*Mike Green*cough*

No way in hell he makes less than 5 million per year. You're dreaming DWI. Pittsburgh is better with him in the line-up. Thats the bottom line. If Redden can get 6.5 million per year after terrible seasons, surely Gonchar get easily match that, or most likely exceeed that. Gonchar signs with Detroit? You know Lidstroms not gonna play forever.

Then he signs with Detroit. I hate to disappoint you Comedian, but I am "not dreaming." We don't have the cap space (especially if it goes down), if you haven't noticed. I have noticed. Hence, why they are grooming players like Letang and GoGo to take over the position that Gonch has etched for himself. It isn't that I don't want to see Gonch retire with that Pens' uniform on. He is one of my favorite players on that team, a nice guy, and a class act. However, it just may not be feasible, and if four or five other players have taken "hometown discounts," including our captain than they may expect Gonch to do so as well. He doesn't have to if he can get more money somewhere else. His career is coming to a end soon, and he is involved in a lawsuit currently. He may be looking for that huge paycheck. I couldn't blame him, but the PENS CAN'T PAY IT!!! I am sorry, but do you lock up someone like Letang for a long deal (at his age and potential) or lose him, or let Gonch go rather than pay him $5 Mill for two years?

As far as the Penguins being "lost" and sitting at 12th seed w/o him (the sky is falling without Gonch attitude), I think the problem lies more with the Penguins' PP coaching than just ONE MAN. Granted, I am not coach, but we have two of the three top point leaders (last season) on your first unit, and can't f'in score a PP goal on some of the crappiest teams? Hmm. Take Yeo out of that position if he can't generate some creativity/points and put someone else in. You can't put the whole PP on one man's shoulders. Gonch retires or leaves sooner or later. Find a way to score PP goals and/or win without him.

:)

Couldn't have said it better myself. I know there is a trend to keep people around after you win a championship but the Pens PP is pathetic. Everything else in the system works well, even with an AHL blueline, why can't the PP?

Don't be silly. It isn't the coach, it is GONCH. He is the only thing that can make the PP work when you have guys like Crosby, Malkin, Go-Go, Letang, Eaton, Staal, etc. on it too. Gonch is the only ONE that can make it work! (detect the sarcasm).

November 23, 2009  11:46 AM ET

I don't htink Gonch would sign for less than $4 - $4.5 a yr. Just my opinion, but I think a lot of playoff teams would be willing to hit the $5 mark for him for a short term (1 or 2 yr) deal.

November 23, 2009  12:19 PM ET

He's not going to sign with Detroit. Nick will stick around for a couple more years.

To bad he isn't as good offensively as Mike Green.

November 23, 2009  01:39 PM ET

Gonchar is gone, he will sign a 3-4 year $15-20 million deal.

Doesn't every player have the same options when his contract ends? We just to find out if anyone will offer him more money to leave.

How about you send the Leafs Staal, and we send you Kaberle. Kaberle is tearing it up this year, and has the Leafs with the 3rd best PP. Also, Kaberle has a reasonable $4 million deal.

Watch for one of the up & coming teams(in the off season) to be looking for a PP QB top 4 D-man (Atl, CBJ ,LAK,PHX(but only if they move) kicking the tires on Gonch

Hmm. Interesting. The other move (and don't be shocked when it happens...depending on his contract clause) is if Shero feels that Gonch won't pay what Shero can pay come January/February, or even March, they may package him with someone else for a trade. That is possible also.

He isn't explosive, Green was always explosive, but just wasn't given the chance.

The Kings wont make a move, they have one of the best, if not the best already in Doughty.
