Yankees to cut down on spending

07:01 AM ET 11.24 | Brian Cashman won't meet with the Steinbrenner family until next week to discuss what the team's 2010 payroll is going to be, but regardless of what they tell him, he won't make the same splash he did a year ago. "We spent a lot of money last year," said Cashman, who dumped a combined $429 million on Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte and watched the quartet play a big part in the Yankees winning the World Series. "We're not going to spend as much this year." But spend they will since there are holes in the rotation, outfield and at designated hitter.

Since the whole point of the snippet T&R decided to plug is that the Yanks won't be spending 400 million I love how the story excludes the relevant fact that they had dropped more than that with contracts like Giambis coming off the books. Sure they spent a typically tremendous amount of money more than the next franchise but their payroll was actually less last year.

Now don't go confusing people with the facts. You are going to ruin their day if they have to believe anything other than the fact all the Yankees do to win is spend money.

Might as well cut down since you already bought a title.

That's exactly right. Free agents Sabathia, Teixeira, Rodriguez, Burnett and Matsui had little, if anything, to do with the Yankees' championship.

Give me a break, man. I'm not for a salary cap, and you don't see me running around complaining about the Yankees buying a championship, but at the same time, I'm not going to let you come on here, piss down my back and tell me it's raining. It is what it is, at lest own up to it.

It's all about perspective.

Especially when perspective means you can spend $400 million this offseason and "cut spending".

In Rob's case it would be swallowing a full load of Steinbrenner baby batter.

Congratulations to Joe Mauer. That guy's season was so far above anyone in baseball's last year that it's not even funny. Pay attention, everybody, because if he keeps playing like he has, he'll go down in history as the greatest catcher of all time.

I'm glad the writers got it right and I think the guy who voted for Miggy Cabrera should be disemboweled.

I'm not saying they don't spend money, I'm saying that you cannot say that's all they do. Why aren't Santana and Halladay in the Yankee rotation? Why other than Rivera and Marte, is the bullpen full of young, cheap pitching? Why haven't they signed Lackey, Bay and Holliday yet? They would certainly be an upgrade over Swisher, Damon and Chamberlain.
