07:04 AM ET 11.24 | Disgraced NBA referree Tim Donaghy talked to a professional gambler before every game he officiated during a months-long betting conspiracy, the gambler tells HBO's "Real Sports" in an interview to air tomorrow night. And he says NBA still has never talked to him.

Wonder if the "fans" are capable of questioning calls and other suspicious activity during games...

... or, if they thing this guy is just an isolated violator and most NBA are "fair" and "objective".

November 24, 2009  07:53 AM ET

As an NBA fan, you have to hope this is a lone wolf situation. Basketball sometimes hangs loosely, and a big scandal would break that bond holding fans to the NBA.

November 24, 2009  08:07 AM ET

Every sport has its own way of rigging the games, Donaghy was one that got caught, if we really knew what went on in sports behind the scene!!

November 24, 2009  08:18 AM ET

I see why he was beaten in prison!

November 24, 2009  08:33 AM ET

I doubt it's more than the NBA knows about. However, I'm not at all surprised it's more than the NBA is telling us it knows about.

Maybe they can launch another "investigation" that isn't intended to actually investigate anything.

November 24, 2009  08:36 AM ET

He should have given David Stern a "cut" when he asked for it...

November 24, 2009  08:44 AM ET

I just like how every one on Donaghy starts with "Disgraced NBA referree Tim Donaghy" lol

I think your over-estimatig Athletes intelligence levels
and their ability to keep their mouths shut

Sure there may be the occasional cheat- but league-wide
conspiracy ??? no way- in this age of twitter and cameras-
it would be IMPOSSIBLE to keep soemthing big under wraps

November 24, 2009  09:13 AM ET

Who cares? Its time to move on.

Twitter?? Come on I think your better then that to use Twitter. Honestly I dont know but I wouldnt be surprised, how many refs are paid to make that call or not make that call.

Its like boxing how many big name fight the small name guy where the small name is paid to take a loss to put more victories in the big name records to keep making people money.

Its all the same in sports

November 24, 2009  09:39 AM ET

Personally, I think he has way more truth to his story than the NBA want to admit to. I am a firm believer that most pro sports are fixed to a degree. Gambling is huge in part of sports...... you just better be on the right side of the bet.

Basketball is probably the easy sport to fix, if you have inside player.....There is more to this than an disgraced ex-ref.

I believe all the major sports have some of form of brotherhood or secrete society that works to make sure the greater good of the league is always satisfied. Imagine how much revenue the league will loose if Bobcats the finals is between Bobcats and Memphis... and a world series without Yankees or Sox for like three years in a row.

Refs can't bet but the league can have a team in Vegas?

I would say that comment was "naive"...

... but, you've shown to be aware of some things.

I'll state that maybe you're understimating the amount of information that is exposed to the public.

Think of it in terms of what we know, then imagine what we're not told.

It's not a stretch to understand that there are a lot of exchanges to which we are not privy.

Exactly...

... I think one of the problems most "fans" have is their inability to accept that sports is just a "business".

They want "purity" and "fairness"... but, it's really all about marketing and perception.

I don't know if basketball is an easier to fix than football, baseball or ANY sport.

A wise old player once said... "if you want to influence a game, don't bribe the star players. It's the scrubs or overlooked players that can make a difference. Not Johnny Unitas, but the lineman who allows Unitas to get pressured that can influence the game just as great..."

Agreed.....but in Basketball it's as simple as a turnover down the stretch or missed free throw here.....

One of the reason sports salaries are so high is to prevent inside "stuff". However, gambling isn't necessary about the money but the high or juice that comes with it.

In baseball it's as simple as a pitcher "being wild that day", in football it's "uncharacteristic penalties" or "missed tackles".

Every sport can "diguise" intentional mishaps.

Heck, people even defend bad calls as "human error".

I think it's because fans want to believe in the purity of the game, they are looking at it from an "idealist" perspective more than a "reality" view.
