Big obstacle to Twins re-signing Mauer

09:47 AM ET 11.24 | The biggest obstacle for the Minnesota Twins signing Joe Mauer to a contract extension rather than allowing him to become a free agent might not be salary but the enormous endorsement opportunities the all-star catcher, who was named the American League's MVP this afternoon, could get playing on the East Coast. Million-dollar endorsement deals, from Nike to Gatorade to automobiles to razors -- as New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has -- could be worth double and even triple what they would be playing in Minnesota.

It's sad that someone can be that good and be so unknown visually to mainstream America. Put him in a national commercial right now and a huge majority of the country would watch it and say "who was that?".

November 24, 2009  10:06 AM ET

Well that is a factor but he can get similar deals in the midwest especially after winning this most recent MVP. the more I hear from him the more he sounds like a low key dowen to earth kind of guy and I think with the new financial structure for the Twins with the new stadium they will be able to give him something that will make him happy to stay in his own back yard.

Not sure I buy that argument...remember Griffey Jr played in Seattle, MJ was in Chicago, Gretzky was in Edmonton for example...maybe the problem stems from his wearing a mask all the time.

Chicago is the THIRD largest market, the WORLD knew of Michael Jordan, you'd go overseas and when you'd say "Chicago" instead of referencing Al Capone (sadly what we were know for prior to MJ) they'd say "Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan!". Also I believe Gretzky didn't start doing ads until he went to the L.A. Kings.

Seattle is a larger town than the "Twins" and there is nothing over there (Seattle area) for a relatively large populace (Portland, etal.) to watch so Griffey started as a "regional" favorite.

The problem is MN is very unpopulated given it's size (lived in Rochester) and the Dakotas offer minimal viewership as does Iowa. He's surround by predominantly empty states, move him lower in the rust belt like Chicago and he'd be a star.................not saying he'd go to either Chicago team but the outcome would be that he'd have notoriety............

Just saying that I don't buy the story's argument that he has to be on the East Coast and you actually helped back my argument...plus he likes his hunting and fishing (which are tough to do in the concrete jungle) so he can become a poster boy for Cabelas.

Mauer is the man, it would be good for baseball to see him stay in minnesota

November 24, 2009  02:12 PM ET

Mauer could get some good endorsements on the West coast also.....particularly in L.A.

November 24, 2009  02:36 PM ET

Mauer's agent is Ron Shapiro who is the same guy that represented both Kirby Puckett and Cal Ripken - who both played for only one team their entire careers. With the new stadium, Mauer being from the area and his representation, my money is on him staying a Twin.

at least 4 different teams wear pinstripes, were you refering to a specific team or just uniform design?
Don't the twins already have a pinstripe home uni?

i suspect that it would be the improved opportunity to win that would cause mauer to leave minnesota, as opposed to $$$
