11:03 AM ET 11.24 | David Beckham has suffered from asthma since he was a child, it was reported last night, but medical experts were quick to play down fears that he could struggle in the thin air he would encounter at the World Cup in South Africa, where six venues are 3,000 feet or more above sea level. The England midfielder was photographed using an inhaler as he prepared for extra-time in Los Angeles Galaxy's MLS Cup final defeat by Real Salt Lake on Monday morning and yesterday his spokesman Simon Oliveira admitted that the 34-year-old had been forced to deal with a mild form of the condition for some time.

Quick with the excuse after losing. Never fails with 19 Management. Beckham is losing support in England amongst the national team fans for a World Cup slot and this loss did nothing to help his pursuit. In fact, it hurt these odds. If he doesn't turn it up a notch at Milan (with better players, his agent is saying ... ouch, to the Galaxy) it's over for him but a cameo appearance.

Cameo players do so much for team morale!

I think it's doping but with a doctor's note.

November 24, 2009  11:48 AM ET

sure think the guardian is also jumping on the out with becks bandwagon. told you guys a while back several of my english friends thought he was a waste of a roster spot at germany 06, much more in this cycle.

it's do or die in milan after the new year...

Of cours, Becks and his managment conveniently reveal this after his team, the Galaxy, lose in the championship.

As dynamo said, it's never Becks fault according to 19 managment.

Of course we all saw who let their man in behind them in the box on the RSL goal and the only man who possibly had a chance at blocking the shot that tied the game, right?

The English Press didn't miss that one. That's the reason for the spin control with The Guardian - it came up on a segment with Sky Sports on how he was standing around. Of course, they couldn't wait to tell you that the injection wore off on his sore ankle.

Ever hear of injecting it again at halftime? Cameo roles never work out well for national teams unless a player has suddenly passed away and the team keeps his locker empty as a memorial - and I don't think Golden Balls wants to push the envelope that far.

November 24, 2009  12:48 PM ET

Not really a shocker... the guy is always puffing on an inhaler... especially toward the end of games when someone's feigning an injury to buy his team time. Just an observation made from a fellow asthmatic. Never stopped Jerome Bettis... doesn't really stop Becks. For the appearance of this being "convenient".... well, I think the injuries on both sides of the ball that required substitutions played a bigger role than any asthma could. I actually think RSL benefitted from their injury... Clint played very well.

Wow, can't believe I'm going to side with Goldenballs here, but I don't see this any ulterior motives/excuse making here. The LA media has been making a big deal of it since the shot of him taking a puff from his inhaler during the game, and I think this was just a confirmation/clarification. I actually wish he would have gone public with this earlier for the kids who suffer from asthma.

As for the goal, that was such a bang-bang play, I don't know that you can blame anyone for it. If anything Gonzo came back toward the play and committed the cardinal sin as a defender by not clearing it back over the endline if you're going to come back toward the your goal. Instead all he did was deflect it right back at Findley's feet.

Bottom line, RSL outplayed LAG in the second half and deserved the win. Kirovski was largely ineffective and got dominated in the midfield, Buddle presented ZERO threat although he did a decent job of holding the ball up, but was poor in his distribution. LD looked slow and the all of the nice work through midfield that got LAG to this point went out the window. How Arena continued to allow long ball after long ball being lofted in to Buddle without any results is beyond me. It's totally contrary to what got them to the Final in the first place. Oh and did I mention that the officiating lived up to the piss poor standard established in MLS?

No doubt it was a collective breakdown. Just making an observation on where I felt it started to go wrong on the play for LAG. Then it just became a scramble.

There was a lot of English Press at the game on Sunday. And all these years none of them knew a thing about this asthma condition? Find that interesting at the least, suspicious too.

I can't speak for what the English press knows or doesn't know, but MLS Cup and the Gals actually have received pretty good coverage in the LA Times this year, and on Monday morning, front page of the sports page had Cup coverage which discussed his televised inhaler puff.

In retrospect, was there some eerie reverse foreshadowing in the cinematic classic "Goal! The Dream Begins!"? Let's review:

Goal! - Soccer prodigy (Santi) from a blue collar upbringing in LA goes to play in England. After initial struggles which nearly lead to him packing his bags and going home, he ultimately plays a role in his club's success. But only after facing his inner demons, one of which is a case of asthma which he keeps hidden.

LAG - Soccer prodigy (Goldenballs) from a blue collar upbrining in England goes to play in MLS. After initial struggles which nearly lead to him packing his bags and going home, he ultimately plays a role in his club's success. But only after facing his inner demons, one of which is a case of asthma which he keeps hidden.

Further more, "Goal2: Living The Dream" focuses on our protagonist's move to Real Madrid, whereas Goldenballs came to LAG FROM Real Madrid.... Coincidence?

i seriously cant wait til Becknuts is out of our media.... i cant stand seeing his mug on FN every EFING day

Great avatar .. I sense the Special One is dying to do one of his famous pitch invasions at the Camp Nou for being called "The Translator" by the Barcelona faithful. Can't wait to see this today.

Then your avatar must really disgust you--or are you just being ironic?

I agree completely. Having asthma was not what made the difference in that game. LAG wasn't playing as well as they had previously and half way through regulation time they snapped. That's when you started seeing the excessive warnings and awful passes. RSL out played them asthma or no asthma. It's hardly an excuse. There are tons of other athletes and non-athletes alike that deal with that every day and you don't see them using it as an excuse if they win or lose.

landon donovan had the run's during the game, but isn't making excuses's.
