Red Sox interested in Cabrera?

07:35 AM ET 11.25 | Two AL Central teams might end up figuring prominently in the future of the Red Sox - the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. The Black Friday sales are expected to last all offseason for the Tigers, who have told rival teams that virtually everyone outside of ace Justin Verlander is available. The list includes impact first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who might have some maturity issues but is coming off a fourth-place finish in the MVP race. If the Twins and Joe Mauer don't agree to a contract extension, the catcher will become a free agent after the season, when the Red Sox would be among the first in line for his services.

This is a team bloated with DH's and 1B and they are thinking of adding another? Where does the Herald get these geniuses?

Yeah, players like Cabrera and Mauer are a dime a dozen. What team would want two players that finished 1 and 4 in MVP voting?

I'm not discounting their talent, but what do you do with Ortiz, Lowell, Varitek and Martinez? Sure you can move Youkilis to third, but what about the other guys and the money you're paying them?

November 25, 2009  07:57 AM ET

I would hate to see MC go. Even if the Tigers are going to be rebuilding for the next couple of years, they have him under a long term contract, and he will just be hitting his prime in then. He should be part of the next competitive Tiger teams. The two questions are: Can he mature and put his ill-timed partying behind him? Can he stay engaged and in shape during the next couple of bad years?
Also, if the Tigers get rid of Cabrera and Granderson, will Verlander want to stay????

November 25, 2009  08:01 AM ET

4th in MVP race, ok , he got 1 first place vote!....Verlander will want out if Detroit goes back to being a 100 loss team year after year

Oritz is gone after this year, Lowell is going to be traded and will be up next year anyway. Tek is now the back up, Vmart catching everyday. The Sox have said they will pay half of Lowells salary this year so he will be dealt for? A very expensive bag of balls maybe ;) Kevin Youkilis will most likely be at third next year, Sox are definitely getting a first baseman, just have to see which one.

I just don't see Henry increasing his payroll that much this year. You have to get a corner outfielder and ss. Next year maybe when the other contracts come off the books, but not this year. Henry does not want to win that bad.

November 25, 2009  08:22 AM ET

Lowell needs to be gone. too. Age is catching up with him just like Tek. Move Youk to 3rd, Ortiz stays at DH, Cabrera at 1st, and MArtinez behind the plate. Now if we could only remember those 3 guys in the outfield also. Bay needs to be re-signed, Ellsbury in center, and get rid of JD Drew for a different RF.

He's already made an offer to Bay that was rejected that would increase their payroll by ten million a year. They'll be sure to up it. By the time they're done this offseason they'll be twenty million dollars above what they were in 2009. But as long as it's less than the Yankees payroll, they're awesome!

November 25, 2009  08:39 AM ET

They need to sign Bay and focus on the Halladay deal.

This guy has now put a huge question mark on his character and dedication. Even Manny never got arrested on a bender with the playoffs on the line.

Henry's past shows he does not want to go the distance when it comes to money. ARod, Tex are proof of that. He's probably all over Theo for Varitek taking the 3 mil. and paying Lowell and Ortiz way over production.

November 25, 2009  08:45 AM ET

LOL, Black Friday trades in MLB.

November 25, 2009  08:49 AM ET

If their plan is to get a first baseman now when a top notch one is available and a team is desperate to unload payroll this isn't a bad idea. Sure the guy got drunk off his **** and arrested the night before an elimination game but what does that matter?
They can split DH between Lowell and Papi for one more year if they don't get rid of Lowell. Youk can play 1st or 3rd bepending upon if Martinez is catching. When Marinez catches they can start Lowell and keep him healthy with a lot of rest.
They can spend less next year when Lowell, Papi and Varitek's contracts are up.

$50 mil to talk to Dice K was pretty procey. Seem sto me they'll spend just enough to avoid the luxury tax and not help out the lower market teams.

November 25, 2009  08:50 AM ET

Has he sobered up yet?

And don't think Henry isn't regretting the bucks spent on Dice K.

Right now you're looking at a corner outfielder and if it's Bay at lest 16 mil a year. A SS @ 3- 6 mil. a year unless they roll the dice with Lowery. And then Cabrera @ 18 mil. There is no way Henry will boost his payroll 35 -40 mil.

Hard to regret the decision when he helped them win in 2007 and get to a game of the WS in 2008.
And don't forget that was a big F U to the Yanks for the Contreras thing that Theo never forgot.
If he could do it all over again and take the chance of not winning in 2007 does he? I'm not sure. Rings are hard to come by.

If the 2 year plan is to let Lowell, Papi and Varitek walk at the end of the year and recoup 20 million (I'm factoring in having to sign another pitcher) next year maybe he will.

I'd be willing to bet on it. Say a case of beer, or a bottle of your favorite potable perhaps?
