08:05 AM ET 11.25 | Montreal businessman Steve Stotland is leading a group of Phoenix-area investors who want to buy the NHL's Coyotes and keep the team in Glendale, Ariz. Stotland, part of a group that looked into buying the Montreal Canadiens when they were up for sale in 2000 and again this past spring, said he began pursuing the Coyotes after the team emerged from bankruptcy court and was sold to the NHL this month.

Why would you go from the Habs in perhaps the best hockey market to the Coyotes in a market that will never support the team? This guy can't be that desperate to own an NHL team?

Sounds like a smarter version of Balsille...."Yeah Gary, don't worry, I'll keep the team here...." 6 months later, get the moving vans to Quebec City

'and keep the team in Glendale'

Is he turning them into roller hockey team?

Or maybe he's taking about Glendale Ontario.

Maybe Steve Stotland is the type of guy that likes to lose $50 million a year.

November 25, 2009  11:53 AM ET

Is he misappropriating his funds too?

Why is it that there are multiple stories about another Coyotes (possible) sale .Yet Florida is also supposedly on the market .Is this cause they are more likely to move Phx. over Fla. .Or is it cause the brass at the NHL want the other owners (hence owners of Phx.) to think that they are working hard to get rid of this albatross .When they open the books to the potential owners do the potential owners run for cover??

Florida was just sold, well, Alan Cohen transfered a majority stake to two minority shareholders, basically ridding himself of the debt. If I'm not mistaken, Cohen owns the arena and makes his money there, so I doubt he'd want them to move and lost 40-odd dates a year.

Irsay set the precedent when he moved the Colts from Baltimore to Indianapolis in the middle of the night. If he can do it in the NFL, a league filled by control freaks at the top, this guy Stotland can with the Coyotes in the NHL. Balsillie just tried to play by the Butt-plug's rules, a lot of good that did him.

"Keep them in Glendale" haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha

I've always had a soft spot for the Coyotes. The first jersey I had personalized was a Mike Gartner #22.

But it's time to say Good Night Phoenix.

Balsillie has always been a mavrick, even on the Pens purchase he hinted he wanted to move them if the arena deal fell through. Once he had a team he could have done what he wanted, ala Al Davis, Irsay, etc... There would be nothing to stop him from relocating, there's nothing in the NHL constitution.

It will not be long 'til the Nat Ho League comes under official scrutiny - and, it won't be like the namby-pamby, ersatz, Pig Gy A Tour investigation was either. Now that G.Ari is somewhat consumed with trying to avoid civil actions, left and right - concerning all manner of franchise anomalies, and exigencies - it really can't be all that long, before the DoJ and the Canadian Justice system realise that something about hockey, quacks like a duck.
