08:32 AM ET 11.27 | The Red Sox wanted to investigate other options before deciding whether to offer Alex Gonzalez a contract to return as their shortstop. Now they have no choice but to find somebody else. Gonzalez yesterday signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays worth $2.75 million. The Blue Jays hold a $2.5 million option for 2011. According to one baseball source, the Red Sox were prepared to offer Gonzalez $3 million if they could not find a better fit via trade or free agency. The solution for the Red Sox now could be former Toronto shortstop Marco Scutaro.

Ah, one of Roger Clemens good buddies.

Where Bucky Dent when you need him?

November 27, 2009  09:07 AM ET

Since the club hasn't moved more directly to Lowrie as the ss assume his inconsistancy over the last two years due to injury may be an issue? Will be interesting how this works out.

i thought they were not trading kelly because he was going to be the shortstop of the future

Bring Rick "Rooster" Burleson out of retirement.

I don't know much about this Kelly kid, but I keep reading that he is a pitching prospect. I have read that he was quite the SS, but his arm strength has them teaching him how to pitch.

Anybody out there who follows the Sox lower levels care to expound on this?

great just what the soxs need to sign another short stop to a bad contract. julio lugo, edgar renteria didn't work out and the soxs got real lucky nomar garciapara declined the 60 mil extension because he was always on IR after the 03 season real bad move nomar!!!!!!!

I liked Rico Petrocelli when I was a kid. How old is he now, bout the same age as Jeter?

Yeah bring back Burleson, the only thing that guy ever hit was the ground after Piniella took him out on a double play.

Careful, you'll be charged $40,000 for the crew to clean out the pit. Then, we'll have to watch the Yankees marytr themselves by autctioning the blanket off and giving the money to the Jimmy Fund.

Actually he's older, closer to Ortiz real age. You know the one on one of his 5 birth certificates.

Is that pit the black hole the Sox have had a SS all these years?

What ever happened to all the speculation around JJ Hardy? I would think he'd be a better (and younger) choice than Scutaro.

Only four read "Ortiz". The fifth was "Arias".

I have heard that Kelly can field and throw but cant hit....so he's going to be a pitcher

I just read the same thing. One helluva defensive player, but can't hit a beachball.

Casey Kelly is a young prospect who passed up a scholarship at Tennesse as a Quarterback to join the Sox.He pitched and played SS in High School and is the son of former MLB player Pat Kelly.Per his agreement with the Sox,he has played SS and pitched in his first year in Single A.His pitching record was 6-1 with a 1.12 ERA in 9 starts. As a SS he hit .224 in 134 at bats.
The Sox want him to concentrate on pitching, but he likes to play SS.

Here's a link to his Bio:

He's had more success as a pitcher so far, I think that's where the Sox would like him. Although I believe he wants to be an everyday player. The Sox believe there next shortstop is the Cuban kid Jose Iglesias.
