12:28 PM ET 04.29 | Go ahead and pencil Arkansas RB Darren McFadden as Julius Jones' replacement in 2008. Jerry Jones said his scouts are already working on next year's draft, but he declined to discuss specific prospects. He was asked if the Cowboys might be targeting McFadden with the pick they got from the Browns in the Brady Quinn deal. "Darren McFadden? Who's he play for?" Jerry said with a wink.

The trade with the Browns was good for next year, but what about this year? We have two 33 year old wideouts, what if one goes down? We got a second round pick from the Browns in this years draft and what did we do; trade it!! It's fine to wheel and deal, but you've got to make take advantage of your opportunities. Dwayne Jarret and Sidney Rice were still on the board, I'm not understanding why we passed on those guys and opted for a trade. What did we receive in return for the pick, a hopeful canidate to replace Jones next; give me a break! Dazed and Confused fan!!

One year wonder? Mcfadden was a freshman all american and one of the top 20 prospects coming out of high school. His name should never be mentioned in the same breath as "one year wonder"

April 29, 2007  05:36 PM ET

There's still one kind-of important thing to see this year that will affect their pick... you know, how the Browns do.
I think that there are plenty of teams that will be worse than the Browns (Raiders--again, Lions-- also again, I think even the Rams and Dolphins will be worse), and if McFadden continues on the run that he was on last year, he'll be a sure-fire top-3 pick.

The Cowboys are counting their chicks before they hatch... or are even conceived.

April 29, 2007  06:26 PM ET

2 first rounders next year might get them in the top 3

April 29, 2007  06:56 PM ET

They did good this draft. Not sure about waiting untill the 7th round to help the secondary though. But, next years draft will be one of the best ever, in terms of talent. Whether they trade up for no. 1 overall, or have 2 no. 1's.

April 29, 2007  06:58 PM ET

If Adrian Peterson got knocked on about being an upright runner then that should be the label on McFadden as well, very similar type running style. But it worked well for a guy named Eric Dickerson and there's no reason a stallion like McFadden can't win the Heisman and be the #1 pick after next season...except Felix Jones is as good of a back as McFadden and is a Barry Sanders-type RB and will probably have a better yards-per-carry average again next season.

The Cowboys need to get Matt Jones from the Jags, and use him as a real deep threat. Matt's skills are going to waste in Jacksonville with Left-which-way-is-which at the helm.

April 29, 2007  07:49 PM ET

Why does the media continue to speculate about a draft that is a year away. McFadden could get injured, another running back could surface, and they might not even have to pick to get him. This is such a **** rumor, they should wait about another 11 months before trying to guess where anyone will end up. Wasn't Michael Bush going to be a top 10 pick at the beginning of last year? Give me a break!

April 29, 2007  07:52 PM ET

McFadden isn't an upright runner. He is more comparable to LT then anyone. Plus he is a runner in the SEC... a pretty good conference that puts out pro running backs last time I checked.

U**** what would make you think the Rams would be worse? They are in an easier division and conference then the Browns. Have one of the best running backs and wideouts in football. A better offense.

The browns being bad aren't guaranteed, but the perecentages are definitlly in dallas's favor.

April 29, 2007  09:45 PM ET

That was a nice trade for both teams really. I think with two 1st's next year, they'll do very well in the '08 season.

April 29, 2007  11:28 PM ET

"they'll do very well in the '08 season"??? are you f'n kidding me? they should be concentrating on doing very well in the '07 season! we needed a young wr, and the boys had a chance to get them, but, traded away those chances. I don't personally like Jarrett, but, Steve Smith was sitting there, and Meachem went 1 pick after Spencer! I also think a guy like Aundrae Allison (who was taken in the 5th) could've developed into a good wideout in a year or two, when Owens and Glenn will be on Social Security. Crayton is not going to be a starter, he's a 3rd/slot receiver, nothing more. Better hope the QB they selected turns into a better WR.

if dallas starts barber, makes jones a 3rd down change of pace back all 2007 season... Dallas will be fighting the patriots for the lombardi in 2007. Would it not be something to see two Gopher running back studs go at it.... two monster sets of wideouts go at it? Best superbowl in ages..it could be... yoda says...

April 30, 2007  06:14 AM ET

Mecham would have been a much better fit...depending on what offense the Jones decides to run...Jarrett is unpolished and a product of the SC system just like all the other USC bust at wide out

April 30, 2007  07:47 AM ET

the browns will be out of the top 10 this year..the filled there 3 biggest needs in the draft with GREAT players...the only way they can get mcfadden is trading their 1st and clevelands 1st

April 30, 2007  07:49 AM ET

Both Thomas and Brown said that Spencer was the toughest person they ever tried to block without question. This is good because Ware was the only one putting pressure on the quarterback. I still think he would have been there in the second round with Cleveland's pick which would have gave us other options. Good luck to the new coaching staff.

April 30, 2007  09:01 AM ET

Yeah it would have been nice to keep Cleveland's 2nd rd. pick and get a receiver too, but that was not gonna happen. Dallas needed to use that pick to get back into the 1st rd. and get Spencer. If Jerry could have saved it, he would have, but Lurie of the Eagles knew what he was doing when he waited until the last minute to propose the trade. Jerry had to make a decision and quick. It was his best option. So what we got instead of a USC receiver, was a another strong edge rusher to compliment D-Ware. With the way our pass rush faltered when Ellis went down, we needed a pass rusher more than we needed a wide-out this year. Next year will be next year. Best case scenario, Browns **** and we have #1 pick. Worst case, we still have two #1's.

April 30, 2007  10:38 AM ET

Jerry is up to his old "not able to draft self again". If will blow the Mcfadden deal or any other future deals when it comes to the draft.

April 30, 2007  12:13 PM ET

I am really sick and tried of Cowboy fans blaming Romo for losing the game against Seattle. Last time I checked, a certain receiver fumbled the ball which led to a safety. Then a cowboy defense couldn't stop Seattle from scoring a touchdown to take the lead. Then the refs overturned a yardage ruling making it 4th and goal instead of 1st and goal. Simply put, The Cowboys lost the game, not Romo.

April 30, 2007  12:19 PM ET

On the draft, we addressed the two areas we are lacking right now, pass protection and pass rushing. The roster is stacked for winning right now. Thats why we went out and got Hamlin instead of drafting a safety which we could have done. If Leonard Davis can give us a decent year and Spencer can help out on the other side of Ware, we can do some things.

April 30, 2007  12:38 PM ET

Yeah, McFadden's a real rootin', tootin' Cowboy! As I recall, to "kick last season off" he tried to break his foot off in some guy's rear-end during a bar-fight or street-brawl.
But, look at the numbers he put up anyway. . . after missing a game or two with the injury. . . and giving away the Heisman Trophy in the process. Wow!

Sounds to me like, so far as character is concerned, McFadden carries a pretty mean football. In fact, if he manages to keep his nose clean between now and the end of next season he might even have a Heisman Trophy to club somebody over the head with. . . or shove up their. . .
