08:45 AM ET 11.28 | Will Bob Stoops be Notre Dame's next head coach? On Nov. 15, the Sun-Times first reported Stoops' interest in the job that will be vacated when Charlie Weis is fired after the Irish's regular-season finale today at Stanford. The South Bend Tribune, citing a ''university source,'' reported Friday that Stoops is the first choice of ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick, who is looking for an experienced college coach with winning on his resume. There is speculation Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, whom Stoops likes, might be on the move to Michigan.

If it is Stoops it'll be interesting to see if Clausen and Tate stick around for another year.

The winning on Stoops' resume goes back a few years. His recent track record shows a lot of wins against the Iowa States and Baylors of the college football and losses in Bowl games.

In short, a perfect fit for Notre Dame.

Stoops is a good candidate from a list of average ones....Kelly is systematic....not defensive-minded...Notre Dame needs to run the ball and play great defense...getting a great defensive head coach would be great...Carroll is one...Saban is one....Meyer would be but benefits from the awesome recruits he gets in florida who race rabbits in their spare time...look at Nebraska...defensive coach...they are rebounding on solid ground...if I was Michigan I would get Harbaugh from Stanford...hopefully standford sends weiss out with a nice butt whooping today....

His recent bowl record and current 5-loss (maybe 6-loss) season notwithstanding, Stoops is a good guy. He's done a hell of a job at Zero U. I can't speak to how good a fit he would be with Notre Dame, of if he's better than their other options (I will stick my neck out and say he's better than keeping Jabba). But I think he'd do a good job there.

Stoops may feel that he's reached his zenith at Oklahoma, and that it would be a good time to move on. Although he did a good job rebuilding their program, he has consistently been losing the recruiting war with Mack as of late, and it's starting to show on the field.

If Zero U loses him, I think they should make a full court press to get the guy from TCU. He's shown that he can get guys to over-achieve (at least based on their ratings coming out of HS) and he's already familiar with the HS talent pool Oklahoma recruits from.

If you get him you might get 10 wins and a bowl. but if you go to a bowl you get this

but 10 wins and a bowl loss is better than Charlie.

He'll lay a few eggs but he can coach. The bad blood of the rivalry might not be the same though

I think that Bob would be agood coach for N.D.

Valid point but you forgot the 6 Big 12 championships and one National Championship. He can coach and has a good resume. While I am personally no OU fan I would have liked to have seen him perform better on the big stage for the Big 12 sake. Just one more NC win would have given the conference more pedigree.

Just last week I read Urban Meyer was the "favorite" to get the Notre Dame job and how he was reaaaaally interested. Now it's Stoops. FN needs to stop bs'ing stories. Stoops has said he's not leaving Oklahoma to go to Notre Dame. Meyer said he's not leaving Florida. They aren't going to Notre Dame. Get over it and find a real story.

Theres also the rumor Brent Venables may leave for greener pastures. If those two head off elsewhere then Bob leaving after this crummy season, a potential rebuilding year next year, and multiple losses to Tx in recently would almost be the end of the Stoops era in Ok.

You may be right but if the AD leaves and his D-Coord leaves plus the wear of a 5 and possibly 6 loss season he could change his mind quickly. If he hasn't already.

Saying I am not going anywhere carries little weight in the world of CFB. It's only stated to get the media hounds off your back and to help recruiting in case you don't leave.

I'd hold off for a bit before publishing Zero U's obituary. Stoops ain't gone yet. And if he does leave, he's built that coaching position into a "destination" job. They're more likely than not to find a high caliber replacement. Again, that's if he leaves, which I'm still skeptical of.

As yet, one new thread on T&R, and it's about ND. If ND does fire/hire this Winter, will posters have cause to call the choice of the new HC Stoopsid? BS? Only rime will tell.

No obit here. Just speculation as to Bob's destination. They'll be back next year but along the lines of 10-3 (6-2 or 7-1).
