Cowboys won't let LB leave

Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis appears to be coming along fine from his torn Achilles' tendon, but the drafting of Anthony Spencer made him uneasy about his future and lack of money. He has asked for more money, his release or a trade, but the Cowboys have no plans to do any of that.

Tough to request more of anything coming off of a big injury like a his Achilles. I can understand his thinking, but I've never heard of anybody calling in sick for half a year then asking for a raise when he came back.

Jerry Jones is a business man. He does not pay big dollars to anyone who does not make plays and make the highlight reels on a consistant basis. I think Mr. Ellis has value and if he really wants to be paid like an elite player all he has to do is prove he can still perform at a high level and Dallas will pay him. But, this is a business, the Cowboys cannot just release, trade or increase the salary of a player, just because they personally think they are worth more money. Ellis, shut up and play. Your performance this season will do all the negotiating for a new contract or recognition as a elite player.

well said cowboy6....

i'd be worried about my job to!! Ware on one side + Spencer on the other = badassery!

July 13, 2007  09:23 AM ET

Oddly enough, achilles injuries seem to be something that the athletes can come back strong from after a year, just look at Julian Peterson. I don't blame him for asking for a raise, he was a heck of a pass rusher. I just don't think he'll get it.

July 13, 2007  09:33 AM ET

This happens with Ellis every year. If he stays healthy, he'll be a starter and shut up about all this. Spencer's a good young pass rusher, but I think he needs a little developing. He really doesn't have an achilles to stand on right now.

YEAH FUNG, guys do come back from this faster these days, but i think he should just do it on the field for one year...if he kicks a--..then he will remove all doubt....i think that its a good move by the cowboys...it gives them much more depth on the d-line now..

July 13, 2007  09:46 AM ET

I have to disagree, Fungus. Remember Kevin Smith? He was an elite corner for Dallas and had the same injury, but was a shell of himself when he came back, and he was about 5 years younger than Ellis when it happened. Jones is right not throw more money at a 32-year-old player coming off a major injury who is ALREADY UNDER CONTRACT.

Basically, the Achilles tendon is named after a mythological god - I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this at all, but ... Go Huskers!

July 13, 2007  11:54 AM ET

Good move by the Boys in essentially telling him to shut up and play. He's got absolutely no leverage in the situation. If he chooses to sit-out and try to force a move, Dallas already has his replacement, and he kills his value to other teams who aren't going to give big money to a guy his age coming off that type of injury.

July 13, 2007  12:35 PM ET

Achilles was not a god; he was a Greek hero, a warrior of great renown who fought in the Trojan War. According to the story, his body was invulnerable to attack except for one heel (hence the phrase 'Achilles heel' and the tendon in that vicinity being named the Achilles tendon).

July 13, 2007  12:57 PM ET

I just think that with the changes Ellis has had to undergo (the shift to linebacker at 30-plus) he should have had a little guarantee coming from Jones. Ellis knows he won't get a big deal anywhere else, and all he asked for last year was his salary guaranteed in case something happened to him because of it. Jones wouldn't do it, and basically told him to play or go home. I'm all for that stance, but this was the wrong player to do it to.
When it comes to trade or release, and the fact that the Cowboys have Ellis' replacement (s), they have no reason to hold onto him, other than Jerry throwing his weight around.

Basically, the Achilles tendon was named after a Trojan war hero (Reggie Bush). I'm still not sure this has anything to do with this at all, but... Go Huskers!

Screw Ellis!

July 13, 2007  02:24 PM ET

ellis was a good player but we don't really need him anymore so srew him!!!!

July 13, 2007  02:24 PM ET

They have about 3-4 million reasons to keep him Charles....the salary cap hit to cut him...

kctexasholdem.com, I think the school bell just rang and it's time to get on the little bus. Please make sure that your seatbelt is secured while going up on the elevator and remember not to lick the windows anymore.

wow, that took alot of intelligence to come up with.

Cowboy6 said it perfectly. Let's hope Ellis never tries to become a businessman. He has no understanding of market value.
