06:44 AM ET 12.11 | Keith Smart, the Warriors' top assistant, is publicly playing the part of timid understudy as the team awaits the full-time return of head coach Don Nelson from a bout with pneumonia. What Smart is doing in the locker room and on the court, however, might be proving that he's ready for a leading role. He is widely considered the heir apparent to Nelson, though no one confirmed that verbiage is in writing.

Just cause his last name is smart does not mean he is a smart coach!

how about telling us his philosophy on coaching....
is he a Nellie clone or is he an Avery-type guy ?

And you're going to put a 1st time head coach in there
after the mind-**** yeasr of Nellie ?
good luck with that

he didnt do so bad while nelly was out sick, they got a couple of wins i think.....but just having a coach not named don nelson would be an upgrade, no matter who it is

True. But anyone with half a brain would look at the Warriors organization and say "pass". I think that Smart will be a decent interim for the sheer fact that he isn't Nellie. Perhaps when the memory of Nellie starts to fade in a couple of years, they can start to look for a better coach.

I'm sure Rambis will be available by then... LOL!

Finally get Nelson outta here this guy Smart looks like a Dumb A**

Never forget Smart's college career at Indiana.

Think hiring the guy would be an intelligent decision. He has spent a lot of time as an assistant and would be a natural fit as a head coach somewhere.

At least he has more experience as an assistant than Lawrence did when he got the Nets job.

Nellie really messed up this team. He brought up the team but he basically tore it back down in a hurry. Can you imagine that they had Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, Al Harrington, Jackson, Ellis, Barnes, Pietrus, Biedrins, Azabuike? That team was good if Nellie kept it together but they decided to break it apart through trades and free agency.

Game winning jump shot from the baseline. Keith will do well as a head coach if given the chance.

Yep, that shot beat a Syracuse team with Derrick Coleman and Sherman Douglas if I'm not mistaken. I don't think the fact that the dude made a jumpshot means he can coach, tho.

Nellie set the bar low... its like coaching Knicks after the Isaiah era... you can't do worse!
