Cubs may move on Byrd, Capps

09:46 AM ET 12.20 | Some believe the Cubs will strike quickly to fill their two primary needs -- center field and setup reliever -- now that the dust and specifics have settled on a Milton Bradley move that was months in coming. If so, that likely would mean a deal with recently non-tendered Pittsburgh Pirates closer Matt Capps, who appears to be moving on a fast timeline and makes no secret of his affection for the Cubs. The Cubs also are high on Texas Rangers free agent Marlon Byrd among a handful of center-field possibilities. And Byrd has made it clear he's at least as high on them, particularly in conversations with new Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, Byrd's old Rangers coach.

The move will be good for both

Maybe Capps will be better as a set up man than he was as a closer.

its the Cubs - they'll both end up being terrible the 3 years they are on the Cubs, then become 6 time all stars beginning in 2012

Just okay moves to strengthen two positions for 2010. Let's not contract long-term deals. If Cubs are serious about next season, they need to make bolder movesthan these.

"Cubs ready to address two holes"

well....we know aboot Bradley....who was the other one?

Middle of the pack in the central???? They won it two years in a row and finished 7 games out last year mostly due to Kevin Gregg idiocy and the fact several people underperformed. They are rid of two cancers now Gregg and Bradley and have all the other pieces from two division winners...if the cards fail to sign Holliday the Cubs win this division by 15 games....if they sign him it will be a 5 game division win....middle of the pack....ridiculous....

I like the idea of moving on Capps to set up Marmol! However, I think Hendry should give serious thought to Marlon Byrd. We really do need another left handed bat in the lineup (with some power). As I understand it, Byrd is a RH batter. I still believe a shut down RH pitcher will eat them alive if there is not some balance in that lineup. The Cubs have too many batters who like to swing for the fence. No one wants to put the ball in play. I'd like for them to seriously consider Rick Ankiel and re-sign Reed Johnson as the backup for all three positions. He can go get em' with the best.

As far as the Cubs swinging for the fences every at bat, I think that may be blamed on Piniella. When they had their great year in '07 they were built just like an AL team, relying on the 3 run homer to win games as opposed to playing NL small ball and relying on clutch hits.
Lou came from the AL and brought that style of play over to the north side. It worked well, but last year with DeRosa gone, injuries to Ramirez, and Soto and Bradley stinking it up the 3 run homer was never there.

Byrd's power will help, but the team needs to stay healthy and Fukodome needs to continue getting better here.

All in all, since they got rid of Bradley I don't care who they sign.

Capps couldn't be any worse than Gregg. Wonder if Capps would close or Marmol.

they don't have much of a choice because of the ton of bad contract they have on the books now.....Byrd would be solid and Capp could be decent

Unfortunately, you're probably right.

you're clearly not a cub fan. any cub fan will tell you that the dysfunction in that franchise defies the rules of mathematics.
