Why the Devils ditched Julien

After the championship core of Devils had become skeptical that Claude Julien possessed either the inner core of toughness or independence from Lou Lamoriello to lead the team to a Stanley Cup, one of the veterans intentionally shot a puck at Julien during a drill to test how the coach would respond. The story goes that when Julien refused to confront the athlete or even acknowledge the overt act of disrespect, the players concluded that the head coach would have to go, and essentially fired him.

wow. tough to keep a coach the players don't respect. Never thought such a defensive minded coach would be/could be such a soft touch with the players. How do you get your players to buy into your system if you can't impose your will on them? UNLESS - Julien realized that Lamoriello values his core players - especially Brodeur, of course - more than his coaches, essentially allowing the inmates to run the asylum, and Julien realized he would not be ALLOWED to discipline the player. If this is true, it took long enough fot his info to come out!

meanwhile, a few miles away, the Giants are telling their coach to be softer with the players.

Who was the captain to keep everything under control? Not Niedermayer. Not Stevens. Not a leader in the bunch. Enjoy the hockey witness protection program in Newark.

If that's really what happened, it doesn't say much about those players.....or Lamoriello for allowing those jerks get away with it. That kind of disrepect, warranted or not, merits a one way ticket out of town. I hope Sutter beats some of those jerks into submission or the Devils get rid of them instead of him.

Spartak Olga is back???? I thought they drove a stake through her heart last week! LOL!

July 15, 2007  06:18 PM ET

denver-You think a guy like Scott Stevens would stick up for a man who can't do it himself? Maybe he didn't think Julia should've been on the ice in the first place. This team has been strong throughout the many coaching changes, and will continue to be. If a coach can't get in his players faces then he lost his edge and that happened.

July 15, 2007  06:29 PM ET

holay ! hey OLGA . . . . . . . you do know thay have chat lines for that kind of talk huh ? lol

July 15, 2007  07:30 PM ET

Great job guys. A classy way to handle things. Whoever was responsible should love what they see in the mirror every day. Don't confront the guy, just embarass him and then lobby behind the scenes to get him fired.

Go Devils Go!

This story is bull ****.Who would willingly shoot a puck at their coach...

July 15, 2007  08:00 PM ET

No wonder this team has a revolving door for coaches. The lunatics run the asylum.

July 15, 2007  09:33 PM ET

Shot a puck at his coach intentionaly? and hen decided he was weak because of his reaction? Just a littl bit questionable for me.

The Post strikes again. A shame fannation gives it all this attention, given it's a notch below the Enquirer in credibility. If you scroll down this same article, this Brooks moron also criticizes the Wings for signing Rafalski (age 33) for five years over Schneider (age 38) for two, at the same price. He also predicts Holik, coming off his worse season in twelve years, will be the hottest trade deadline commodity in the nhl. And he thinks our forty-eight year old Sean Hill will be hard to replace.

Well said Howatt !!

July 16, 2007  02:49 AM ET

Must be more to it than shooting a puck at a coach,Honest Loooo has to be smarter than that, oui?

July 16, 2007  05:48 AM ET

Howatt- was it an American or Canadian sports writer? I only ask because of the last article I read - something to do with Canadian fans should back off about getting rid of a franchise in Nashville. Seems to me that American writers have little to no background (those writers from small market areas where newer teams reside - sure sports writers in Detroit, NY, Chi-town, Bean Town know what they are talking about because they have been doing it for an eternity) on the Canadian game. And will not speak about it in the same reverence or with the same knowledge as Canadian sports writers. The issue is even apparent in long standing sports news magazines/newsletters (remember reading The Hockey News, and Hockey DIgest when the same writer continually stated "It's the Rangers' year" year in and out..He was finally right.) the idea that Holic will some how come up with a miraculous recovery is as crazy as thinking that a new owner will revive (actually bring life to) the Nashville Market - no matter the design or scheme a new owner comes up with, people in Nashville are no more interested in Hockey than they are in building igloos (houses made of ice).
Julien had a rough go in Montreal , but for different reasons, I think Sutter will do ok, but I didn't think cutting Julien loose that late in the season was very professional... Ole Lou should look into some code of ethics or something...

July 16, 2007  01:01 PM ET

"I hope Sutter beats some of those jerks into submission or the Devils get rid of them instead of him." Wouldn't and won't happen with any of the Sutter boys...you'd be on life support if you fired a puck at any of them

July 16, 2007  01:02 PM ET

Honor? Somehow shooting a puck at your coach does not seem an honorable act. One more reason to root against the most boring team in professional sports. May the demise of the DEvils last a long, long time.
