New play-in format by 2011?
Sources in several conference offices, athletic directors and television networks told The Post that support is steadily growing for a "Plus-1," format in which there will be a national championship game following the playing of two "semifinal games." The first title game could be played in 2011. Under the new format, the top four teams would be seeded, probably using a voter/computer formula similar to the current BCS system and a sixth major bowl game would be created. The four top-seeded teams would play in two "semifinal" games, using the existing bowls - Orange, Sugar, Rose, Fiesta and the current BCS title game on a rotating basis - with the two winners meeting in a newly created bowl.

i've been hearing about this plus one formula for a couple of years now no bcs formula is flawless but with the exception of a full ncaa division 1 playoff (which we will never see) it's about as close as we will get

Don't kid yourselves into thinking this is fair. It will do absolutely nothing to address the haves/have-nots gap, and while it's a workable compromise, it really doesn't do much for playoff advocates OR non-playoff advocates. It basically just gives BCS-haters a 4-team formula to gripe about instead of a 2-team formula.

Be careful what we wish for...I'd rather not see a fluky champion or a string of upsets that are exciting at first but kills the playoffs. George Mason and Golden State were cute....how'd the Final Four that year and this year's NBA playoffs turn out? Any kind of playoff promotes that happening. At least we just about know 2 of at least the top 5 play for the title.

I see a slippery slope happening. That fifth team will get screwed out of it, so they'll cry for an 8 team playoff.
Really though, 8 teams will be enough b/c that 9th team crying about not getting in won't mean as much to me as the fifth team whining.

It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully people like Dr. Gordon Gee won't ax this. Yes, they are student-athletes, but not having a playoff means not having legitimacy. Get over yourself and let's get this deal done already.

What Beardguy said. No team will be completely happy, but this helps.

And it will give a definintive champion in those years that controversy clouds who the real National Champs are. While the fluke issue could happen, it isn't as likely here PHS, because its alot tougher for underdog teams to roll through the powerhouses in College. One big upset win can happen, but stringing 2 together in a row would be harder than a coffin nail. Look at the NFL - how many "fluke" teams ever win the Super Bowl? or even make it?

What a horrendous idea this is. It cheapens the regular season while solving absolutely nothing.

I like it. Not so much that it takes away from the BCS, but it allows potential tied Champions (Polls, BCS) to face one another.

This is as close as we can hope for to a playoff so I'll take it.
Not too many people care if the 5th ranked team in the country gets shafted, but look back at how many times the 3rd ranked team did! Oklahoma gets smoked in the Big-12 championship game and goes on to play in the National Championship game?

At least OU played in a conference game. The nadless PAC-10 and Big-(11)? don't even have the sack to play a conference championship, fearing that it will hurt their lame conferences during bowl season. It wouldn't have mattered last year, because the Big 11(?) was so weak that OSU would have one that championship game too. Before being annihilated by the Gators. Go figure.

All conferences should have a championship game, if you lose that, you should never make the National Title game. They need to address the time off between the regular season and bowl game, didn't OSU sit for 3 months before playing in the Title last year? Thats the biggest problem if you ask me. Anyone who watched the game saw that it wasn't the same ohio state team we had been watching all year.

So why then complain about a championship game?? I think this will be a better system than we have now

True, there will be some years that the #5 team will get screwed. But it is so much better than the #3 team getting screwed, which seems to happen every other year.

I'm scratching my head on the money issue. If 4 teams play in the first 5 BCS games...they get the money for that....so does that mean they get paid again for the new bowl? Cause that would me a major dissadvantage to EVERY other school. *shrugs*

The new Bowl will be the NC game in which they get paid for already so it wont be like any other team is really missing out on anything

Just keep it the way it is, no system will be perfect.... #1 plays #2, it's that simple, we should really look who's picking the rankings, thats what needs adjusting...

Mixed Nuts, keep in mind that every conference shares bowl revenues (and yes, they changed it so ND no longer gets all ~$10 million of bowl revenue to itself, it's prorated to 1 teams share). Presumably, the conferences that put the teams in the +1 game would also share revenues from that - but I couldn't say for certain.
