Culpepper's tour begins with Bucs

Never one to pass on the opportunity to look at a free agent, especially a free-agent quarterback, the Bucs met with quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Thursday, Bucs officials confirmed. The Bucs wouldn't appear on the surface to have a pressing need for Culpepper, because they currently have five quarterbacks, including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski, on their roster. However, Simms has struggled with his throwing mechanics since returning to the field following spleen surgery and Gradkowski seems to need more seasoning after struggling through most of his rookie season last year. It is also growing increasingly obvious that Jake Plummer will not be in camp.

This I don't understand. I think he can play the West Coast System.....But the Bucs are still trying to figure out the Offensive Line and No real No.1 WR.......I am Confused!

I just don't get what Gruden is thinking. Not only about this decision but everything else post-SB win.

July 20, 2007  08:57 AM ET

More quarterbacks! Give me more quarterbacks!

Perhaps he's just preparing for an imminent Garcia bust. He'll need a big, strong QB to take some hits behind that O-line.

DC may sign a one year contract with someone but I'll be suprised if he's on a roster come September. He just doesn't have it anymore. After what is almost a two year layoff, his legs just don't have the same explosiveness to get him out of trouble after he spends what feels like a week in the pocket trying to figure out the D and deciding where to throw.

July 20, 2007  09:10 AM ET

I'm with NERO on this one....It just doesn't make any sense at all....They just aren't a very good fit together. He needs to either go to the Vikings, Falcons, Jags, or he could back up Farve for one season.....and then take over.

July 20, 2007  09:13 AM ET

JIM SORGI??? I hope your not Serious..........DC will make a comeback. He can be very effective if in the right situation.

Miami needs a whole offensive line Makeover. Sampson Satele is a STEP in the right direction. Green is a GREAT Underrated QB....But he wont make it past week 8 with that OLine.

In a related story, The Tampa bay Bucs have extended one year offers to every kid in America who has ever tossed a ball in his back yard.

July 20, 2007  09:18 AM ET

All QBs need a line to be effective but DC needs one as much as anyone. He has essentially become (he pretty much already was) a slightly better Drew Bledsoe.

July 20, 2007  09:21 AM ET

Culpepper with Moss = cocky pro-bowler
Culpepper without Moss = cocky turnover machine

You can have him Gruden!

PS. Tampa must be planning a new 5-QB triple wisbone split-wide offense ...

July 20, 2007  09:31 AM ET

Maybe they're gonna turn them into a QB cheerleader squad. No no, I know what Gruden's doing, he's building himself an entourage... Little Napoleon and the QB posse! Watch out Tampa nightlife..

July 20, 2007  09:48 AM ET

I thought Gruden has made it clear all offseason that he likes having Garcia and now this. Gruden will finally lose the job he should have lost 2 years ago.

July 20, 2007  10:08 AM ET

Say it ain't so Gruden, take a lesson from ING Direct...

"Save your money"

July 20, 2007  10:12 AM ET

Everytime we think we know the answers, the bucs change the questions. Can we please just get 1 good quarterback instead of picking off of 5 other teams scrapeheap. We have a 37 year old journeyman as our starter, an interception machine with no spleen, a choker with a mustache who doesn't even want to play, a guy from Toledo who should probably be playing in the ArenaBowl and now we want a QB who hasn't played in 2 1/2 years with gimpy knees. If I was Chris Chandler, Jeff George, hell Charlie Ward, I would stay close to the phone.

July 20, 2007  10:17 AM ET

I just can't see Chucky making it rain Fung.

July 20, 2007  10:48 AM ET

I just don't get it. Although competition is good, Gruden has five drastically different QBs, a nonexistant offensive line and not (appearant) long term or short term strategy. It seems as if he is purposely trying to get fired, take his money and go fool some other suckers.

chaz0717, I laughed my butt off at your comment. Thank you for providing an image which will bring me great joy for the next week or so. hehe

Glad I could Help E

July 20, 2007  11:38 AM ET

Geez, guys, lighten up. Absolutely nowhere in this "story" does it say that Culpepper SIGNED with the Bucs. It said he talked with them. What's the harm in that?

July 20, 2007  12:04 PM ET

What???s the harm? Well like stated close to the top of this page you have 5 QBs already what kind of confidence can your team have if your coach says that he has his guy to lead the team and then every other week he wants to bring another over the hill QB to look at. Montana might as well come out of retirement he could do as well as DC at this point.

The "All QBs Welcome" Bucs need to focus on moving forward with Garcia. He is 10 times more productive than Pep is now. They already have a decent Back-up in Sims.

Hey Gruden, give Tommy Maddox a call and see if he wants to be you 10th QB.
