Newspapers may boycott NFL games

Outraged by a new rule that would turn photographers into walking billboards, several prominent newspapers are considering boycotting NFL games this fall. The edict would require photographers to wear red vests with prominent product logos. The New York Times and Houston Chronicle are among the other newspapers that have expressed serious concern over the new rule. The league likely will point out that photographers at the Olympics had to wear vests that featured the word "Kodak." But those bibs were darker, the logo was smaller and the Olympics are essentially a non-profit event.

that is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard

I can't imagine there is anything substantial the league will gain from this. I agree completely with the New York Times and the Houston Chronicle's consideration of a boycott. Although taking on the NFL is pointless considering its popularity, it will hurt the league's image enough that no plausible gain can come of telling them to walk if they don't like it.

the nfl is getting ridiculous.

July 20, 2007  08:24 AM ET

Oh no! Having to wear a vest! What could be worse?! I don't know how anyone could function having to wear a VEST! That's terrible! It's like shackles and a chain! I'm getting claustrophobic just thinking about it. And not only a vest, but a vest with a logo!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!! I can't take it! Tonight I'll have nightmares about 900 lb. vests and logos fighting each other! Those mean and nasty NFL guys! (If any of those photographers don't want a sideline pass to watch the game, let me know, I'll be glad to take a few snapshots).

Anyone else appreciate the irony (and vested interest) in this article? A newspaper (the Chicago Tribune) running a report about a potential newspaper boycott?

July 20, 2007  09:00 AM ET

No one is going to boycott. Thats just idiocy. If the NFL back down from this, look for the papers to sell that space themselves. I do have one question. Think of any game you have ever watched. What was any newspaper photographer wearing? Can't remember? Me either. Who watches the games to see what newspaper phtographers are wearing?

Goofy

July 20, 2007  09:32 AM ET

There was a new law just passed that each pro team must put my name or domain on public display, cause my tax payer money just helped build there new super stadium, cause they didn't spend enough of the money they made from me wearing the advertisement on my vest.

July 20, 2007  09:34 AM ET

A walking billboard, you say? What a novel idea! Why not pin a tail on those donkeys and make'em wear goat horns while they're at it. It will add to the entrtainment value at a spoting event. After all that's what people pay to see: photographers! LOL!!!

Posters on this site have left comments on my profile page that have shocked, sickened, and dismayed me.

Condemning me to hell, wishing my death, and even threatening to kill me.

I didn't sign up for that.

I enjoy reading many of the comments posted about these "rumors." There are insightful observations, fresh new perspectives, and even a few good writers.

There is also a growing colony of what can only be called internet sociopaths. I want to believe that they are, by and large, pathetic teenaged boys with self-esteem issues.

But there is also a contingent of religious kooks, middle-aged voyeurs, and pitiful young men pretending to be something that they're not, including hot babes.

If you're reading this and you're one of them, go find yourself another forum.

Let's leave this one to sports.

And no more death threats, thank you very much.

I get enough of those at work.

And speaking of sports: as a newspaperman, I would not wear a red vest with a corporate logo on it unless somebody gave me a nice check.

Cash would work, too.

Uh, ok.... Maybe that one should have been a blog, tom

July 20, 2007  10:05 AM ET

I think that the NFL is making plenty of money. There is no need to make the photographers wear advertisements. The league has already limited the coverage that regular newspapers can show. By that I mean that sixty second video rule.

July 20, 2007  10:21 AM ET

For the love of....please..please.. can we start Football early this year? I can't take much more of this.

July 20, 2007  10:30 AM ET

does the greed and stupidity ever end on the part of the NFL

July 20, 2007  10:49 AM ET

Olympics non-profit? hahahaha. What a joke. You think any city is going to put 3-5 billion dollars into renovations for nothing in return? Yeah right.

Does anybody hate this feckin' Tommy Sixkiller as much as me?

He's a lady boy without a life.

July 20, 2007  11:10 AM ET

WOW! The NFL is insane. They keep getting greedier and greedier. They make more than enough this is just obscence.

July 20, 2007  11:52 AM ET

This seems like a pretty cheap, petty thing for the NFL to try. Why bother, you do yourself more harm than good.

July 20, 2007  11:57 AM ET

i don't understand why the nfl has to try and make money of the reporters and photogs. they are getting out of control when it comes to branding every inch of their stadiums and practice fields. if they want extra marketing profits, just put ad patches on the uniforms. then maybe they will see how greedy they look.
the league is becoming way to pompous. the level of play really hasn't grown in the last decade, but the ego of the league has.

it is really making me appreciate college ball that much more. no only if they could fix the BcS. that's for another topic though.

the newspapers are making money off the NFL, why not get some back.

plus I will wager these threats from the newspapers are BS, they are all media **** and will do whatever to make a buck. let them boycott
