Gaines Adams seemed eager to get started Monday, but how quickly the first-round pick gets to training camp depends on negotiations. The No. 5 pick, linebacker A.J. Hawk, signed for six years and $37.5-million. Adams' deal likely will be considerably higher because the salary cap has increased from $102-million to about $109-million. Agent Fletcher Smith said he doesn't expect talks to begin any time soon.

Wow the guy above me must hate Gaines Adams, either that or he hates rich professional athletes

Calm down fella

May 1, 2007  12:09 PM ET

Mattman..take a chill pill. Did Gaines take your first born or something? They need to get the max uppfront because at anytime a team can release a player or an injury could end their career....Get as much as you can.

May 1, 2007  12:12 PM ET

He needs to prove himself just like any other rookie in order to get top dollars. Remember, the NFL is a whole lot different from college football.

May 1, 2007  12:26 PM ET

No reason a player shouldnt get payed also. NFL is a multi-billion dollar behemoth, all the owners are almost on par, money-wise, and players are greedy **** because most of them came from nothing and want theirs? Put yourself in his shoes...**** straight you would be trying to get the bigger and better contract.

May 1, 2007  12:42 PM ET

Give the kid a signing bonus and good contract with incentives if he does well.
That???s the problem with pro contracts , you get money before you prove anything.
Don't blame the kids, the owners know what they are doing and will pass the costs to the fans

May 1, 2007  12:44 PM ET

This is why there should be a rookie salary cap like the NBA, give them a 3 year guaranteed deal on a sliding scale depending on what round you were drafted. It would take care of all this BS of someone who has never played a down of PRO football demanding MEGA-Lottery type money.

May 1, 2007  12:47 PM ET

It's not about the Bucs not paying the kid his money. He'll get his. It's about six years and $37.5-million not being enough. Now put yourself in his shoes. Would you jump at 37.5 million over 6 years or hold out for a few more millions at the risk of your career? Holding out is just ****, when you look back at all the hold-outs who got injured or came in unprepared and struggled. It's not worth it.

May 1, 2007  01:14 PM ET

NMGolferMike, you are absolutely right about a rookie pay scale. It's really just the top 10 picks that are grossly overpaid. Getting to pick in the top 5 should be a big advantage, but with the huge contracts guaranteed to players that have never played a down in the NFL, it can set a franchise back years if the player doesn't pan out.

Totally unrelated, JaMarcus wil be a bust in Oakland due to injuries and a really bad OL. Quinn, is average and overrated, and will never be anything but mediocre in the NFL. One of the QB's selected in 2nd round or later will out perform them both, mark my words.

Remember that TheJazz told you first...

Gaines Adams will do less than A.J. Hawk, and wasn't as highly touted.

Can we say "drafted too soon?"

May 1, 2007  01:33 PM ET

the draft was only 2 days ago. Whomever wrote this has no idea what will happen. Let's let them talk about things before we kill this kid and call him a selfish player

May 1, 2007  01:41 PM ET

I am amazed at the pay scale of rookies in the Nfl. I do not know of any profession where you are paid so much as a 'beginner' without actually showing you can be good at the job. In soccer, the rookies are paid the equivalent of $2-3,000 per week, until they sign a second contract which would then be inreased greatly , if they have shown they can hack it in the league.

May 1, 2007  01:57 PM ET

Where does it say anywhere that Gaines is considering a hold out? He was just drafted two days ago and negotiations have not even started yet. The fishwrap they are using as a source is notorious for trying to stir up trouble and very rarely get any of their info or speculations right. There are very few people in the Tampa area that believe anything those hacks write.

May 1, 2007  03:10 PM ET

If Adams holds out he runs the risk of being unprepared and perhaps losing the shot at starting. Look at how long Phillip Rivers had to wait for his chance to start. Adams should also talk to Broderick Bunkley and see what holding out for a big contract can do to your playing status.

May 1, 2007  03:32 PM ET

dabucfan... Props to you, the tampa trib has it out for Allen and Gruden, cause Gruden called Ira Kaufman a "*Bleeping* Moron" Last year before the Cowboys' game

May 1, 2007  04:44 PM ET

Hawk is an LB... those guys are a dime a dozen. A pass rushing DE is hard to come by. I say 40 to 47 mill is about right. 37.5 million is not where it's at. Hawk got jerked. I think Master P did his deal.

May 1, 2007  07:53 PM ET

This article does not even hint a holdout...wtf are these ***clowns from the St Pete Times trying to start. Their half assed sports reporting is getting quite stale.

May 1, 2007  08:46 PM ET

I hope Adam Gaines gets as much money as he possibly can from those money hungary billionaire owners, because when Adam Gaines gets old and can't play then at least he will have something to live on. Look at Earl Campbell, the Oilers ran him in the ground and how much did he get paid. Not enough. I don't blame those young guys for holding out. Hold out for as long as you can so everyone in the family can turn in their two week notice. Wish I was in the family.

May 2, 2007  09:17 AM ET

Whatever happen to the love of the game. The cost of a ticket to a game is reaching unobtainable for the middle class fan. I think not only with Adams, but with all professional sports, that the salaries need to be realed in. With that said I also believe that owners/franchises are making way to much money. They need to give the fan a break, so that we can enjoy the sports as well.

May 2, 2007  09:38 PM ET

We shouldn't be surprised by this, it happens every year, some high draft pick thinks he's worth more than an established veteran because he was drafted in the top 5. It doesn't matter that he hasn't played one down in the grown man's league, just as long as he gets his money. That's okay, once he gets on the field with the big boys he'll learn just like every other rookie learned: The Hard Way.

I wonder what his last paycheck looked like? 37.5million cant put a smile on his face let him sit maybe he could get a part time job at taco-bell drive through.STUPID.
