D-Rays flip-flop on Yankees trade

Earlier this week the Devil Rays believed it would take more than Scott Proctor for the Yankees to pry utility man Ty Wigginton away from them. Now, according to multiple sources, the Devil Rays would make the trade. And though it's not clear if the Yankees have made an offer, they have been talking to the Devil Rays and have discussed converting stud prospect Joba Chamberlain from Double-A starter to big-league reliever to take Proctor's place.

no ... just please no

July 21, 2007  11:04 AM ET

I agree. Please don't make this trade Cashman. KEEP PROCTOR!!!!!!!
I really don't understand why they would trade him.He is one of the best guys they got in that pen. Ty ain't gonna help them make a run.

Still, neither he nor Farnsworth should be held onto by the Yankee. There are way better pitchers out there, Cash's just gotta find em. Cause we ain't gonna win nothing with those two imploders. (Torre has to leave too btw, he's just a non-manager, sitting on his f*cking a*s all night).

what a rip off by the devil rays
ty wigginton is worth some mid level aaa guy

July 21, 2007  11:47 AM ET

Ty Wigginton is a good player who is versatile enough to play pretty much anywhere that a manager might need on any given day.

The D-Rays are pretty notorious for expecting a great amount for anyone they might consider dealing...however, I think ownership could lighten up a bit with Ty and reduce any expectations here.

So...Alex Rodriguez and only 91% of his salary might be enough to do the trick. :)

Wow, how Scott Proctor has fallen. Just last season he was deemed a cornerstone to their bullpen. I blame the organization on this one. They completely mishandled the guy. He pitched way too many innings and his arm is now not nearly as explosive as it once was.

FIRE CASHMAN!!!!!

He's a joke.

July 21, 2007  03:20 PM ET

the yankees have a stud prospect?

July 21, 2007  03:58 PM ET

I'm watching Proctor pitch against the Rays right now.

Oo, struck him out looking. Nice.

Yeah, I wouldn't trade him either. The Yanks are slumming here by entertaining Ty for Proc. I mean, Ty's nice, but the Yanks have some good young players already in Phillips and Duncan (hit his 1st bomb today, and Giambi is due back within the next three weeks.

Besides, they can do better by dealing Proc.

And there's a bomb surrendered by Proctor to the D-Rays back-up catcher, Casanova.

The Yankees have plenty of stud prospects. I don't understand people who still try to belittle the Yankee farm leagues these days. If you look up any information regarding the Yankee minors, or if you actually knew anything baseball related, you would understand just how much the minor league system has improved.

If Wang and Cano do not satisfy you, let???s just say one name will be etched into the Yankee pedigree once Philip Hughes comes back. Hughes, while in the minor leagues was the top rated pitcher throughout all of the minors.

Not to mention, pitchers like Chamberlain, Betances (low A ball), Horne, Kennedy, Sanchez (acquired in the Sheffield trade, currently on the DL due to Tommy John Surgery), Cox, Whelan, Orhlendorf, DeSalvo, Clippard, Britten, and new draftee Brackman. All names I have mentioned are indeed pitchers.

They are very low on impact position players, but some are ready to play now (Gardner, Sardinha, S. Duncan). They also have a top 20 baseball prospect in Jose Tabata. Not to mention a rising prospect centerfielder in the name of Austin Jackson.

To say the Yankee farm system is thin is an insult to the work Brian Cashman has done. The Yankees should make this deal, and try Joba Chamberlain as a long reliever, like many other young pitchers that have gotten used to the majors this way.

The Yankees have a farm system, and if I were other teams around the league, I would be scared as hell. With the top notch pitching Cashman has produced, the Yankees will be able to spend their money on position players rather than high priced pitchers. There was a reason Cashman signed Clemens, rather than Zito, Meche, or Lilly. The reason being, is that they plan on having next years rotation filled mostly by young rookies making the minimum (Wang, Hughes, and Chamberlain, etc). Judging by all the money coming off of the books, I wouldn't be surprised to see A-Rod signed by the Yankees even if he opts out.

To say the Yankee farm system is thin is an insult to the work Brian Cashman, and the organization as a whole. The Yankees should make this deal, and try Joba Chamberlain as a long reliever, like many other young pitchers that have gotten used to the majors this way. Procter is an average reliever, whose arm is burnt out due to Torre???s mismanagement of the bullpen. Not to mention, with all the pitchers coming up, the bullpen will be younger, and better as the years go on. They can afford to lose Farnsworth, or Procter.

July 21, 2007  04:00 PM ET

Yeah, Chamberlain is projected to be a #2 type starter. He's got a flat curve ball, but touches low-to-mid 90's with his fastball. I heard Gene "Stick" Michael praising him on the radio for his poise and maturity at such a young age.

There's a two-out triple surrendered by Proctor. He's really helping his trade value.

July 21, 2007  04:10 PM ET

Proctor has simply been overused. He still can be a cornerstone of our bullpen, but we need to get rid of Frannysworthless-$$, use Mike Myers some more, and bring up some new blood into the pen. And actually use them.

July 21, 2007  04:10 PM ET

The Yanks cant afford to trade away any pitching for non-pitchers. As it stands now their entire staff is a skeleton crew of has beens and nobodys, but at least those guys can get enough outs so Yanks can outscore people. Put a Double AA rook in there in the pennant chase and Yanks might as well trade ARod, Jeter, and Posada and rebuild.

Wiggy has played in NY before, he's a solid backup at any position on the infield except P and C (ofcourse). He'll provide more punch than Cairo and has the ability to get red hot for periods of time.
Personally I think this deal can be made w/o trading Proctor, but the Yanks might want to infuse some new blood into the bullpen, see what happens.

July 21, 2007  04:56 PM ET

Chalklounge: Actually Chamberlain's fastball touches 95-99mph on the radar gun. He looked very solid in this years minor-league all-star game.

Trading Proctor for Wigginton really wouldn't help us. Our offense is NOT the problem. Proctor is one of our better relievers; if anyone should leave it should be Farnsworth. He has done absolutely nothing for us in his nearly two year tenure, can't set up for Mo or close for him when he needs a rest.

July 21, 2007  06:06 PM ET

Ooh, mid-to-high 90s, even better. Thought of writing that but didn't want to overstate his skills. I'm excited for him to get up here when he's ready, but the thought of him in middle relief seems like kind of a waste.

July 21, 2007  08:48 PM ET

wiggington suks ****.....and proctor save our **** last year...dont trade proctor!

July 21, 2007  10:07 PM ET

Proctor is my favorite Yankee reliever. I think he's a good fit for the Yankees, and should stay with them.

July 22, 2007  01:41 AM ET

Farnsworth, a mid-level minor league pitcher, and cash for Carlos Pena? That sounds better. It would help the D-Rays out too b/c they are dying for pitching. He would hit 10 more homers a year with that short porch in right and hes still young. Giambi can't play first and is getting old. And it's just a matter of time before Phillips starts to suck.

July 23, 2007  10:10 AM ET

I don't think you can get rid of proctor at this point. and why trade for wiggington when you have cairo?
