According to a major league source, the Rangers are "strongly leaning against" trading Eric Gagne before the July 31 trading deadline. They are more likely to pursue a contract extension that could keep him here for at least two years.

Yeah, the Rangers have had 82 games started by guys with ERAs between 5.50 and 6.69. What good is a closer if he never comes in with a lead?

Help the ground crew, of course.

If your gonna be "competative" in '08, then your gonna need to keep a solid bullpen in place. If he isn't shipped out, an extension will get done soon after. Just hit on the Tex trade (i.e. Loney and Kershaw) Anyways, if Gagne leaves, he'll atleast be a Type B and you'll get a supp pick.

the nice thing about gagne in texas is it basically gives him the year to heal his arm, which has been a major issue the last few years. As was stated earlier, they never put him in with the lead, so he rarely goes in, giving him the extra rest the Dodgers never gave him the chance to take. Whichever team he plays for next year will hopefully get the REAL Eric Gagne - Johnny Shutdown

I'd be ok with keeping Gagne but they gotta trade the rest like Tex, Sosa, Otsuka, and possibly Lofton if they can't sign him for a longer contract. The Rangers actually couldn't be too far from competing if they just had a decent starting rotation.
