Big East talking Tropicana bowl

Posted: Monday July 23, 2007 07:20AM ET

The Big East, seeking to expand its bowl affiliations when its current contracts end in three years, has talked with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays about a bowl game at Tropicana Field. The league filled its bowl commitments last season but had Pittsburgh bowl-eligible at 6-6 without a bowl to play in, and the conference would like to have relationships with six bowls in its next cycle of contracts.

Wow, a chance to actually have fans at Tropicana Field!

Wow a 6-6 team got left out of a bowl... there should be LESS BOWL games not more. If a 6-6 team goes to a bowl and loses, they had a losing season at 6-7, not a very Bowl worthy record

There are way too many bowl games. How many dot com's, or pizza franchises, or furniture store named games do we need? What's next the Always with Wings Bowl? Enough of this already.

I was totally outraged last year when Pitt did not make a Bowl. They should have at least made it to the Patrick Swayze Dance Academy Bowl.

Hey Ellen....the Big East fielded 3 top 10 teams last year.

Big East was 5-0 in bowls last year. Beat the top 2 ACC schools in the process.

The Big East bowl tie-ins are horrible. The #12 team in the country ended up in the Texas Bowl playing a mediocre team from the Big 12.

With the higher profile in the Big East and a more competitive conference, they definitely need to upgrade those tie-ins, especially after a 5-0 bowl season.

As long as WVU goes to the Championship game....I don't really care

The Big East is being ranked as the second best conference in the country this year. WVU and Louisville could beat anybody. Rutgers and South Flordia both are legit top 20 teams. With 4 teams in a conference, and half of them ranked, I don't think they are over-rated. Pitt wont be bad for much longer either.

The Big East does pretty good getting into great bowls and i think they actually need more bowls and spread them out better for scheduling so i can watch them instead of 5 games in one day like a few times last year how horrible. What they need do is to get Army and Navy into the league. Just wished Syracuse would get better at recruiting they have a bunch of good players in the NFL but there team sucks big time. They need to get a big arm and some WR'd spread out the "O" and get back into the game.

Tampa is something of a steaming hell hole.

A 6-6 team didn't make a bowl game. Boo hoo. Talk about too many bowl games!

The Big East has 4 pre-season Top 25 teams in WVU, Louisville, Rutgers and South Florida. Pitt could also fare very well. If any conference is overrated, it is the ACC.

Put any one of the four pre-season top 25 teams in the big East teams in the big 12 (south especially) or SEC or big 10 and they would have mediocre seasons. No question about it. The Big East needs to be lobbying for Notre Dame to join. They need more teams. I agree with the idea that teams with .500 records aren't bowl teams. There is no sense of reward to a 9 win team with as many bowls as there now. A .500 team going to the MAC Computers bowl is just a consolation prize, like getting a participation ribbon.
