Four weeks into NHL free agency, most of the power names have been snapped up.But one particularly intriguing free agent remains available and sought by the Red Wings.Peter Forsberg is recovering from yet another surgery on his right ankle, which has caused him constant grief since 2001. That, though, hasn't stopped him from attracting interest from clubs like the Red Wings, who still recognize him as one of the game's great clutch players. General manager Ken Holland has told Forsberg's agent, Don Baizley, that the Wings are interested in adding the Swedish superstar to their lineup.

Thats just fine and dandy . . . . . except that he'd have to play to contribute . If Forsberg can do that , then the Wings look like genius' in taking the chance on him

This is the perfect fit for Detroit. They don't need huge contributions from him during the regular season, because the Wings usually get 95-110 points in their sleep. They can afford to let Peter pace himself during the season, taking the odd night off and getting ready for the stretch run into the playoffs. Other Wings players (Datsyuk especially) would benefit greatly from having a legend around, seeing his work ethic and passion for winning. It is a no-lose situation for the Wings.

If he's healthy he's still one of the best.

July 29, 2007  12:09 PM ET

I'd agree with you JoeC....this could be a huge splash for the Wings

July 29, 2007  12:50 PM ET

plus, as a well-documented red wing killer, forsberg won't be torching the wings anymore! maybe they can room him with hasek as they baby the 2 of them through the regular season

July 29, 2007  12:50 PM ET

They have to be careful with how much they pay for Forsberg. I don't know what the Players Association & the CBA allows but maybe give him an insentive-laden contract with games played and points. NO ONE looks like they are willing to sign him so lets see if Forsberg will step up.

Forsberg is a hall of famer, he would be a great addition to the Wings. He just needs to be healthy. With an already talented team in Detroit he should be allowed the time to get healthy and be ready to play when it really matters. I like the idea, however, don't overpay for him. It's not worth a ton of money for some of these high hopes. Just look at Bertuzzi last year, some grit and toughness he brought to the Wings in the playoffs. They really should have spent the cash on a new goalie. We have the surrounding talent, we need a goalie who doesn't need a walker.

Burke just gave washed up Bertuzzi $4 million. Is Forsberg less valuable than Bertuzzi? All things being equal, who would you rather have on your team? A guy who's never lived up to the billing or a winner like Peter? I'd even take a one legged Forsberg over Bertuzzi. Peter has more spare parts than Frankenstein but never quits. Lesser men would have retired long ago. This guy somehow keeps going.

This is probably the best hidden deal in the NHL. I believe he will be healthy for the whole season if they use him wisely (3rd-4th line as a surprise when the opponent's lines are a little tired...).

The Red Wings are the best at discovering hidden gems and deals (Holmstrom: 10th round, Datsyuk:6th and Zetterberg: 7th round.. and yet one of the best lines in the NHL!). If the Avs passed on him though he said he'd like to come back to Denver, too bad for them! The Wings won't make the same mistake.

They took a chance on Hasek and it paid off! Thsi will work!

July 29, 2007  02:23 PM ET

Forsberg is much more valuable than Betruzzi because Forsberg is the bionic man! HEck, he's got his own show on NBC this fall! Wait a minute, I think the show is called Bionic Women. Whatever, same thing!

July 29, 2007  06:59 PM ET

He'll be used as a 2nd liner so if he doesn't play its not like its the end of the wings' season. they have a solid team now, adding him would just be a bonus... now they'll have datsyuk's deke and forsberg's in their arsenal...

July 29, 2007  11:44 PM ET

Forsberg will be in Denver next year if he's in the NHL at all in the first place.

July 30, 2007  05:23 AM ET

Perhaps Forsberg will go back to Philly. . . . .in a " unfinished bussiness " type mentality . . . . . to claim his loyalty . . . . . . . . for the Flyers in drafting him . trading him , aquiring him , trading him again . . . . lol

July 30, 2007  07:19 AM ET

as much as he'd help the team I don't think he'll come to Detroit...it's Denver or Philly...which will save me the moral dilemma in having to cheer for my least favourite athlete of all time

July 30, 2007  07:53 AM ET

If this happens and he stays healthy, Detroit's offense will look great next year. Now if they could just get a goalie that wasn't distracted watching Matlock and Mureder She Wrote.

July 30, 2007  08:19 AM ET

When healthy (which is key) on of the top 3 players in the world. Strong on his skates, skilled, can play tough, clutch......Peter the Great!!! Hope it is not over for the kid!!

July 30, 2007  08:27 AM ET

I just imagined Forsberg in red & white and threw up in my mouth.

July 30, 2007  10:12 AM ET

This will be a good move for Detroit, which is really the only types of moves they make lately

July 30, 2007  10:14 AM ET

How did Detroit "TAKE A CHANCE" on Hasek, one of the best goalies of his generation, give me a break
