Roy surprised at length of deal
One month ago, Derek Roy was considered the Buffalo Sabres??? third-best center and was on the payroll for $627,000. His status soared Friday. Roy and the Sabres avoided salary arbitration when he signed a six-year contract worth $24 million, making him the team's second-richest player behind linemate Thomas Vanek. Roy was surprised at the length of the deal, which extends three seasons into what would have been his unrestricted free agency. Roy and agent Larry Kelly requested a five-year contract, but the Sabres responded Thursday night with a six-year proposal. The Sabres then increased the money Friday morning. Roy was hooked.

Hey, Derek! Don't forget to send Kevin Lowe a "Thank You" card.....and , make sure you put him on your Christmas list because you would never have gotten a sniff at that king of money in Buffalo if it wasn't for Kevin Lowe!

I agree. Thanks to Kevin Lowe for getting the Sabres scared with the Vanek offer sheet. They screwd up with Drury and Briere and they KNOW it.
Now they would sign any 4th liner to a 8 year, 52 million deal....
I always though Darcy Regier was one of the best GMs, he disapoints me every day a lil' more.

I'm surprised the troll is actually playing hockey! Don't let those NHL giants tell you otherwise!

they actually learned their lesson from how poorly they handled Drury & Briere, obviously. Too bad they let their only two superstars go before they learnt it

I could'nt understand why . . . . . . Buffalo waited til the end of the season to attempt to negotiate players contracts . . . . . . anyhow ,I can only imagine that there policy should be " re-negotiated " , the whole " Vanek" episode and the loss of Drury & Briere may not have taken place , had they talked contract during the season . . . .

The NHL is a JOKE and I will continue saying that. Roy made $627k last year. A 63 point season and he gets a 3.3 million dollar raise? Come on. This sport is so poorly managed that it continues to self destruct!

Ha! BOSTONGM you have to be kidding. Bettman is talking about expansion when there are too many teams, like 6 too many. Roy gets a 3.3million raise for 63 points. there are more 40 year olds playing now than ever before. Anaheim, the Stanley Cup champs, had awful attendance. Maloney gets hired as GM when he drove 2 teams into the ground. But the NHL isn't a joke? What did your Bruins do to make themselves better? They have 1 legit NHLer (Savard) on their team.

I'd like to see the NHL contract about 4-8 teams; Florida( do they still have a team?) Atlanta, Columbus, Carolina, that's a good start. maybe even Dallas too

You can be mad at the Lowe offer sheet but it forced the Sabres to lock in their best forward for an extended period of time. They were smart enough to get Roy for 6 years too. Yeah, it's for more than Roy should be paid right now but with player salary increasing by his 3rd year of the contract he'll probably be getting paid less than his market value unless his stock declines.
