10:57 AM ET 03.09 | Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz will both wind up on National League teams. Both right-handers remain free agents. Both intend to pitch this season. And both almost certainly will stay in the NL. Martinez, of course, is a starter, one who helped the Phillies reach the World Series last season after joining the team on Aug. 12. Smoltz prefers to start, but is open to relieving. He, too, contributed to a postseason club last season, joining the Cardinals on Aug. 23 after getting released by the Red Sox.

brilliant!

So long as Smoltz goes nowhere near John Farrell, he should be successful.

So long as Pedro goes nowhere near the Yankmes, he should be successful.

So are they a combo package? If you sign one you get the other? Thats all I am getting of this story.

Thought SMoltz was running for office; savior of the GOP

The sooner he does, the sooner he can do Rent-A-Center ads like Aikman and Magic Johnson

Was this article written by a Magic 8-Ball? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it isn't a logical assumption that these guys will end up pitching in the NL at some point, but forgive me if this doesn't fall into the "shocking revelations" category for me.

so,if the weakest team move where the other weakest teams are and enjoy the same division, then those weak teams have no excuse to lose, i can see tampabay rays and baltimore orioles move to central division,on that way they could give a shot to go to the world series!

March 9, 2010  06:46 PM ET

radical form of flating' realignment in which teams would not be fixed to a division, but free to change divisions from year, to year, based on geography, payroll and their plans to content or not.

March 9, 2010  06:47 PM ET

the angels should at least sign pedro martinez, he could be a leader for this team!

March 9, 2010  06:49 PM ET

a motivation player like pedro would be a good fit for the angel players!

March 9, 2010  06:53 PM ET

about let the nationals sign them both to a one year deal, that would be the right call! i mean since the post said only national league, then washington could be the best place to go!

Look for an updated Smoltz rumor soon. Now that Joe Nathan looks to be done for the year, he might wind up in Minnesota.
