Phillies have best all-around infield of modern era

07:38 AM ET 03.10 | The quartet of Placido Polanco, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard is not only efficient but perhaps demands higher praise. It is potentially the greatest all-around infield of a modern era that began in 1947 when Jack Roosevelt Robinson kicked down the door that had barred players of color from the major leagues. Polanco hit just 10 homers for the Tigers last year, playing in one of baseball's toughest home-run parks. He has a chance to hit 15-plus in the friendly alleys of the Bank, particularly batting in front of Utley and Howard. J-Roll hit 21 homers last year in a season when he was MIA most of the first half. The Gold Glove shortstop has hit as many as 30. Utley is quite simply one of the great offensive second basemen of all time and has consistently put up Rogers Hornsby power numbers.

they dont even mention that howard is consistantly around 280/45/140, imagine his numbers without that bs shift.

March 10, 2010  07:54 AM ET

oh please, how bout win some more titles first... and they sure kiked butt against the yanks pitching... oh wait no they didnt...

Does this Philly paper have some stats to back up this claim?

March 10, 2010  08:02 AM ET

Way too many holes in this argument to address them all. I guess catchers are not considered part of the infield? I seem to remeber the A's had some pretty potent infields back in the 90's. As do the Yankees right now.

March 10, 2010  08:03 AM ET

Yes this is quite the group of players but they didn't mention defence anywhere. I'm not a Phillie's fan so can't say how these guys really are.

March 10, 2010  08:04 AM ET

This is quite a claim. Meanwhile the Yankees have three solid HOF candidates anchoring their infield. Second base is the only position where I would give the Phillies the advantage over the Yankees infield.

I don't believe catchers are because they spend most of their time in foul territory. Would you really expect a Philadelphia paper to hype the Yankees?

They said the same thing about the 1999 Mets ...

Maybe they do, however it might also have something to with the weak offense generated by the Phillies catchers. While I wouldn't expect the Phil. press to hype any team other than theirs, it's a fallacious and wild argument at best.
While Utley has more power, Cano hit 326, with over 200 hits, 25 HR, 45 doubles and 85 RBI hitting either 6 or 7. And he is much better defensively.

exactly...i think that shift is one of the gayest things in baseball.

Morning Dum, Tex faced that shift all year, didn't seem to affect his numbers too negatively. Certainly better than Howard's and better glove to go with it.

March 10, 2010  08:33 AM ET

polanco jroll utley howard? OR arod jeter cano tex? close call but the yanks have the better infield both offensively and defensively

March 10, 2010  08:33 AM ET

What are they smoking? Jeter hit 18 hrs last year and over 330 (410 on base). He does compare favorably with Palanco and/or Rollins. I would hate to make the case for Palanco against A-Rod or Howard vs. Tex. Cano and Utley is close. If you add in catcher, its not even an issue. Cervelli is better than Ruiz, never mind Posada.
I think they watch the NL too much!

Maybe some of these players need to spend more time with their hitting coaches and try to spend some more time learning to try to hit to the opposite field

The Phila press isn't doing any different than we do on here as fans. You talk up your Yankees, I talk up the Sox and other fans talk up their teams. It's not meant to be taken serioulsy and if you get some good debate out of it then it's all good.

Agree 100% only way to keep the infield honest is to hit the other way enough to force them to play straight up.

March 10, 2010  08:39 AM ET

I would rather have a Philly cheesesteak.

Mongo, no doubt I'm a Yankee fan, but I try and bit more objective than just a homer. i would expect more from someone with Bill Conlin's reputation. I'd have to think a while before I'd say the Yanks had the best infield since '47. But I would say it's a little bit better than the Phil's. Not much, but a little better.
