Carlos Beltran is likely headed to the disabled list after an MRI revealed he has a strained left oblique. Beltran has already missed six games since hurting himself swinging in batting practice and said he is not close to being in playing shape. Manager Willie Randolph acknowledged Beltran could be placed on the DL retroactively so that the Mets do not have to play a man short.

This really sucks...I hope the Mets pull of a trade now so we can still hold ground at first place...not having Beltran is going to hurt the lineup but if they make a trade for a bat to take over Left because alou is just a waste of time i can't believe the Mets got him...Let's Go Mets

That's bad news.

At least they still have Franco!!!!!

Typical. Beltran goes on the DL at least once a year. At least LoDuca has Castro behind him. Now Minaya is forced into the trade market in a vulnerable position. Between Green barely making a difference and Alou barely playing, they need help. I smell Reggie Sanders and it's not pretty..

Losing Beltran in the lineup is bad, but I don't see a reason to be too concerned. Yes, Alou is a waste and I'm counting down how long it takes for him to wind up on the DL again. However, this could be a blessing in disguise.

If Milledge continues to play at this level and Delgado's bat continues to heat up, we could hold on through the summer and have a rejuvinated Beltran, Chavez, and Gomez to take us into the playoff stretch.

If Mets fans followed the weekend series, the pitching is the only reason we went 4-3 against the Pirates/Nats. Sosa pitched horribly and the bullpen blew it for both Oliver Perez and Mike Pelfrey. That's what is most pressing, I think - the bullpen.

Get By Buckner 86 is an intelligent man, Dave.

Agreed the pen is clearly a priority. If they could somehow get Chad Cordero without mortgaging the future it would make their pen the class of the NL and allow Glavine an Duque to significantly lower pitch counts heading down the stretch. Of course Pedro would be nice to....

no reason to hit panic button, they will be fine without beltran .if they lost reyes that would be a different story.

Sadly, I haven't seen one mention of testicle fortitude today.

July 30, 2007  02:24 PM ET

I have been saying exactly that for the past month - PITCHING is the greatest concern for the Mets - mostly relief, but they could still use another starter as well. I just dont trust PELFREY AT ALL and Sosa is not consistant.

pen didn't blow it for perez, fielding did
sosa is just bad. We need you, Pedro

Beltran has yet to justify $119 million. What a waste of money.

July 30, 2007  05:09 PM ET

Too bad for the Mets and Beltran that every year isn't a contract year...

Astros will trade Jason Lane to replace Buckner.

yankee fans...your toast...most of nation wants it...we in Red Sox nation know it...Cleveland and Seattle are better...no wild card for ya this year...with your cashman genius and no pitching...including mercenary clemens...oh yeah, gabbard, Lester, and bucholz...forgot schilling back too...we;re better...pitching wins...so take your 220 million dollar lineup of geriatrics, and go home for eight straight year...rivera is done too...we HAVE closer now...and we are younger...props to Tigers as a Red Sox Fan is not blinded by arrogance and sees they are team to beat...can't wait to hear from ya...seem to be hiding these days/years

July 30, 2007  09:03 PM ET

Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?

July 30, 2007  10:22 PM ET

beltran's injury doesnt seem major, sure he isn't worth the 119 mil. but if he is out we got gotay, milledge, shawn green, so i think we would be ok for a while.
