The Coyotes and restricted free agent defenseman Keith Ballard are still in discussions. GM Don Maloney has called Ballard "a priority player right now." Maloney said the length of the contract has been a snag in the talks and that financial terms are still being discussed. The Coyotes are around $5 million below the mandatory minimum payroll.

The yotes just are'nt spending any money . . . . and it'll show @ the beggining through to the end. . . . .when they have another losing season . . . . . . Man . . .it would just plain suck to be a Coyotes fan . . . .

Isn't it kind of early to be trying to land the first pick overall next year? There should be some kind of penalty against teams that tank their season on purpose before it even begins!

July 31, 2007  08:04 PM ET

PLease someone tell me that they won't try and land Tavares after tanking the 07 /08 season. . . . .. something appears fishy here . . . . . .

Tnking the season? You guys remember that there is this little thing with the few balls to be drawn... Even losing 82 gmaes does not guarantee the n1 pick... only increases your chances!

You gotta think that Gretz would not want to be a part of an intentional tanking (would he?) If he had known that Ballard was going to be their "key" signing of the off-season, would he have signed up to coach again? But he musta known, he's got his thumb on every part of the team...

Maybe Gretz is not so " mom , apple pie and the canadian flag " after all . . . . hey his wife was hanging out with Tocchet for quite awhile before they got caught . . . . . something had to have been said or understood as to why or where she was going. . . . . . I guess I'm just saying that perhaps there is more than meets the eye here . . . . .why would he look so comfortable knowing that his team is so far behind in spending for talent? Why has'nt the Coyotes stepped up during the" great talent search" of the 1st of July? . . . .
