Is Rutgers headed to the Big Ten?
In the early '90s, soon after Penn State became the 11th member of the Big Ten, its longtime football coach and athletic director tried lobbying for another eastern school to join the conference. "(Joe) Paterno and I would tell them, 'If we can't get Notre Dame, Rutgers should be our first choice,'" said Jim Tarman, the since-retired athletic director. A seemingly crazy idea at the time, it's not so ridiculous anymore. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany suggested last week expansion needs to happen "in the next year," though he later backed off and said no schools have been contacted.

If they add another school they have to change the name to The Big Ten and Two crap schools to boost the powerhouse winning percentage. It would be great to add another school but we need another power in our conference not some half rate wanna be powerhouse..If they added rutgers it would help rutgers for recruiting and getting big bucks but I don't see it helping the big ten..

Rutgers is the only good D1 school in the NYC area. I think it would be great to have them go into the big ten....it gives new yorkers a team to root for. The only other team we have is syracuse, and there all the way upstate, and since McNabb and Freeney, their program has hit the skits.
Last year Rutgers run ignited the city, and this year it will do the same! Go Rutgers, Big Ten here we come!

Big Ten is garbage so... Rutgers would fit in just nicely.

The Big Ten should take Vanderbilt so Indiana and Northwestern can win one more game each this year. The SEC has had it's punching bag for too long (and their 'power' teams still manage to lose to Vandy once or twice a year). I suppose Rutgers would be a fine addition, though. It would add another middle of the pack team for the Big Ten.

Rutgers would be torn to shreds in the big ten.
Eric662,
You must be a USC fan........The PAC-10 (WAC-10) is the WORST conference in D1. If the Trojans went to another conference like the Big 12, 10, or SEC they would not win everygame.

You know it doesn't matter what team the Big 11 gets. They just need to get a 12th team. Rutgers would not tarnish the Big 10. They would make it possible for them to join the other conferences that have Championship Games. The big 10 will not be taken seriously by the rest of the nation until they have a Championship Game.
I think it would be good for the conference, the NCAA, and Rutgers. Now that the Irish has signed a schedule contract with the Big East they will not join any reputable conference. They will eventually be Big East so they can win. If they were to move to the Big 10 they would fall under Iowa and MSU, not being a bad place those schools have there great moments. Just meaning ND would rank in the upper bottom half of that conference. Now when they move to the Big East they will be Conference Champs every year. What would you do if you were them?

I am no Rutgers fan but I must admit RU appears to be a consistent top-25 team for years to come. Playing Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State however yearly might knock them down a peg. And if they were in the Pac-10 (the nation's best conference) they would go winless.

The Big 10 has enough **** in its fanbase already - I'm particuarly looking at Buckeye-football + IU hoops, Purdue (in general)...with an honorable mention for Illini fans if they didn't whine so much. Keep the Jersey trash in Jersey. Or Queens. Don't tarnish our trash.

Vandy would beat Indiana and Northwestern. If you were gonna pull a team from the SEC that would be an easy win, you're better off pulling Ole Miss or Miss State. And I'd still bet on the SEC cupcakes over the cupcakes from any other conference.
The only way Rutgers continues to be a top 25 team is if the Big East continues sucking as much as it has since Miami and Va Tech jumped ship. Although I guess that is possible. Even still, I see Rutgers falling off considerably. Rutgers would be a bottom feeder in the Big 10.
And the notion that the Pac-10 is the nation's best conference is laughable. When the Pac-10 fields more than one team that can make some real noise nationally, I will take notice. They're not the worst BCS conference, but they certainly aren't the best.

Funny Eric662 that you call the Big Ten garbage...what competition does USC have against anyone in the Pac-10 this year? How many Pac-10 teams finished in the AP Top 25 compared to the Big Ten? How many Pac-10 basketball teams were in the top 25 compared w/ the Big Ten?
Yeah, and you call the Big Ten garbage...ignorance is bliss.

The Big Ten is a conference of the Midwest and should stay that way. Just like the SEC is big in the Southeast and the Big 12 in the great plains, the big ten should remain exclusive to midwest schools. adding rutgers is a move i highly disagree with

Geographically, I actually think Tennessee or Nebraska make the most sense for the Big Ten. They're close enough and bring a huge fanbases. Of course, UT would NEVER leave the SEC and Nebraska plays in the relatively weaker Big 12 North (relative to the Big 12 South, that is). No, neither of those will happen, not in a million years.
Rutgers would be a good addition from a business point of view, but honestly ND is the school that should join the Big Ten. Once they realize that they're irrelevant to the NC discussion as an independent and are done glutting themselves on TV money, they'll come around.

All this stems from the newly created "Big Ten Network." Another team brings a championship game, it brings in an entire new fanbase, more viewership, and more money. This is ultimately about money and Rutges will potentially attract the Jersey/NYC market, which not even Tennessee, Loisville, or Nebraska can compete with. The Big 10 is more interested in money than adding another powerhouse school to it's conference.
