Trouble brewing in A's clubhouse
For several weeks, there has been a lot of grumbling in the A's clubhouse, some directed toward manager Bob Geren. With the reigning division champs falling out of contention, several players have voiced dissatisfaction with first-year manager Geren in the past week, though none would do so on the record because of concerns about job security and playing time. Among other things, one player described Geren as "wishy-washy" and another called him "oblivious." Players who spoke to The Chronicle last week said that Geren spends too much time in the clubhouse, he's overly friendly with the players and he is so loath to be negative, one player said, that he won't let a player have it when needed.

Is that approach detailed in MONEYBALL????? Why is Billy Beane considered such a genius? The A's never do anything.

hmmmm, ALCS last year? Should've killed the Tigers, but they suddenly got hot.
What did your team do last year?

Maybe because he has one of the smallest payrolls in the American League to work with and somehow ends up with a winning record every year and gets to the playoffs with regularity. I could name at least a dozen ballclubs with much higher payrolls that don't get nearly the amount of success the A's do. How about the fact that every year the A's whip out another previously no-name kid who becomes a star. The guy is more proficient than any other GM out there, bright-guy. Wake up.

I think two things are wrong here. One, Beane's made some questionable deals recently and he barely got off clean last season (Loaiza's long term deal, trading Ethier, signing Chavez and letting Tejada go). Secondly, and more importantly, I feel Beane's control over his managers is the one downfall to his style.
Beane picks good players, but he needs to pick more commanding managers, guys who are veterans in the league and know how to deal with injuries and malcontents. They say Geren is laid back, but that's not what a team like the A's need right now.
He should have picked Ron Washington to be manager. They don't share the same baseball philosophies, but one thing is clear: This organization is a few steps from being rebuilt from the bottom up in preparation for the new stadium in 2011. The last thing they need is an aloof manager.

I agree Dunedan....Art Howe ran a loose ship..Ken Macha was fired..then un-fired in the same season..then fired again? Every year we read and hear stories about what a loose clubhouse they have...how they have so much fun. And every year they flame out.

Beane is loosing his grip and touch for talent. Too many people have employed his techniques for ferretting out good players and the normal rock bootom prices he used to get for these veterens' is now sky high.
What I would do to have Tony Larussa back guiding the Green and Gold, Especially in thinking about how we blew the time Mulder , Zito and Hudson had together. Larussa and Duncan would have had the A's in at least one WS withthose three pitchers at there height ow prowess and what do the A's now have to show for it?
Dan Haren and he is gone in another year and possibly Travis Buck who is pretty decent. That is about it, the talent pool has run dry and that is the problem for small markets teams when the minor league talent development process runs dry.
Painfully, it will take a while for the A's to become competitive again. They did not accomplish anything this time around unlike the talent laden runs in the 1970's and 1980's. See you in 2012 or so when things turn around.
Historically the A's are due for on of those late 70's early 80's plunges unless a new manager with some real N@t's can be secured.

As a Dodger fan my team has been garbage for years, the Lasorda years are very muched missed. The money has been there, but the not the wins.
Congrads to the A's for doing so much more with less.

These losers in Oakland leaking complaints about Geren through the press are pathetic. There's probably a good reason they're worried about playing time: they suck.

There's this oily, gossipy feel to this one. If folks are unhappy, they should come forward, and say it. The "insiders say..." approach seems sneaky and unprofessional.

If the players don't like the way things are going then they should have played better earlier in the year. The manager is not the one losing games, they are.
What the hell are the whining about anyway? They are well-paid to play a children's game for a living.
At least grow some b alls and go on the record, that anonymous sources tactic is for p ussies.

This is largely the same group of players who helped Beane run Ken Macha out of town because they didn't like him, either. Funny thing is, they criticized him for being too distant; now they're complaining that Geren is too chummy and too positive for their tastes?
I am a fan of the A's, but the players are the ones who have to make the plays. Quit yer cryin' and show me that you can win -- then I might be more inclined to listen to collective bellyaching about Geren.

I recommend a prescription of growing more hair..injecting more stimulants, and wearing even uglier uniforms for the A's woes.
