Is Woods's return bad for the PGA Tour?

08:30 AM ET 04.03 | Tiger Woods is golf's moneymaker. The PGA Tour, CBS, Augusta National, everyone associated with the Masters is breathing a huge sigh of relief that Woods is returning for the year's first major. But Woods's return may be the worst possible thing for the PGA Tour in the long run. Certainly, hundreds of golfers can thank Tiger for driving up purses and making sure that even the relatively mediocre are living quite comfortably. But Woods's dominance is a clear sign of the superstar effect which causes opponents to concede, rather than rise to the occasion when competing against him. Golf's finest era had Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer duking it out on the course (not literally, of course). Tiger is so dominant that he has eliminated the critical aspect of sports: competition.

The media created the god-like image of Tiger Woods. Unfortunately, like any other ordinary mortal, he failed to measure-up. Now he's just another golfer, like it or not. Having said all that however, golf is actually better for it. Tiger Woods brought awesome skill and sadly, dragged this noble game through the muck, giving it a huge black eye. Golf is a game of character and honesty, both of which were trashed at the hands of Woods. The upshot of this situation is that the vast depth of outstanding skill that was just under the surface can now come out and show itself. The PGA is rife with a huge group very skilled players that are overshadowing Woods without having 10th tee meltdowns, club flinging, vulgarity sessions, and bimbos in every city. Tiger Woods did not qualify for the Ryder Cup yet he was selected for good TV reasons, not his skills. There were more deserving young guns out there that deserved it more, but were not denied. The game of Golf is now healthier and more vibrant than ever before as Woods falls into the ranks of the mortals and learns, slowly, bit by bit, how to be a real man and a humble golfer.
