Umps prevent background checks

Major League Baseball and its umpires union are locked in disagreement about baseball's right to conduct background checks on umpires, representatives from baseball and the World Umpires Association said yesterday. Rob Manfred, baseball's executive vice president for labor relations, requested consent to perform in-depth credit checks on its approximately 70 umpires, an action that legally requires employees' consent. The 30-minute meeting between baseball and representatives for the umpires became contentious, Manfred said, soon after Lamell McMorris, a spokesman for the World Umpires Association, proposed that in return for the authorization to perform credit checks, a seventh umpire be added to regular postseason crews. Manfred strongly objected and soon ended the meeting.

Where exactly would you put a 7th ump?

Once everybody is done posturing, I have a feeling that this will get done quickly. The least they can all do is run credit checks on the officials. They should do it on the players, too.

Typicall labor bargaining in pro sports....one side tries to fix an obvious problem...the other counters with a totally unrelated and unecessary proposal. 7th Ump? WTF?

1) Credit checks were already done when the umpires were hired.
2) Every year in basketball credit checks are done on the referees and still at least one referee found a way to avoid his gambling problem being detected until it was way too late.
3) The same negotiator for the NBA's refs is also the negotiator for MLB's umpires
4) Just like in the NBA where the extra referee is an alternative in case one of the referees becomes incapacitated, the extra umpire would be an alternative.

I think NSA should do the background checks.... anything that can be compromising could be use for blackmail and that leads to fixing games... why not? 'Don't care for the NBA if survives or not... basketball is ruin as a sport because there is no longer strategy involve is nothing but a pickup game... I can do a pickup game with my buddies and turn out more interesting and guess what??? No Refs!!!!! Baseball is different is the National Pastime and because steroids I stopped following... now the umps are afraid of background checks???? bye, bye.... My choices are National Felons League... formerly known as NFL or... or.... or.... never mind...... there is always special olympics... hopefully there will be HONESTY.... that's all I demand from my sports... HONESTY!!
