Red Sox: Kielty in, Pena out
The news yesterday that Bobby Kielty is coming to Boston -- sooner rather than later, presumably -- means that Wily Mo Pena will eventually be going. Kielty's a better outfielder than Pena and makes more consistent contact, though he lacks Pena's raw power. Kielty???s major-league high for homers is 12, which he hit with the Twins in 2002.

Okay Red Sox Nation: Explain to me this move. I see no discernible difference between the two players. Kielty's fielding average is slightly better but the batting numbers look almost the same. Pena has a little mor power. Kielty basically appears to be a corner outfielder with almost equal games in left and right. He has played some first and some center. So, is it possible he is a little more versatile than Pena? Or is this a salary dump? Basically the article says the Sox will only be responsible for a portion of the major league minimum. Or is it that Pena has just been that bad in Boston that if the Sox, if they can't move him, are willing to eat his salary?

Isn't the word 'power' used liberally these days? Everyone describes JD Drew as a slugger. Pena as well. They had so much hope for this guy but he's made absolutely no improvement.

Yes. Boston is pretty much sick of Wily Mo, his constant 3-swing strikeouts and his horrible defense.
Personally, as you know, I'd much rather have had Reggie Sanders as the 4th outfielder, but once rosters expand, Ellsbury will be up anyway.

You know, when Pena played for the Reds he was a really promising prospect. I wonder if the Red Sox have a good hitting coach. I mean, it's not like you need to instruct guys like Ramirez, Ortiz, Youkilis, etc. on how to hit. On team like the Bo-Sox or the Yankees being the hitting coach must be like being the Maytag man. I bet if Pena went to a smaller market he could improve. He has too much potential to give up on him this early in his career.

Reggie Sanders would have been a good move.
Sometimes shaking things up a little can be good for players. A call up can add some energy to a veteran team, and sometimes the guy called up can overperform for a period of time.
Heck I have been tired of Wily Mo for over a year.

Exactly, Jaminrawk, that's why Wily Mo for Reggie Sanders made so much sense (and probably why it didn't happen).
Wily Mo could go to a struggling team and get the at-bats he needs if he's ever going to reach that potential and the Red Sox get a veteran presence and a solid player off the bench.

Shouldn't his name be spelled "Willy?"

Jaminrawk - I believe you are correct to an extent. Those batters that you mentioned work very hard with their respective hitting coach. David Ortiz was not the monster he is when he was in Minnesota. According to your thought process, he should have already learned to be "scary good" when he was with them.
Kielty in my opinion is a just a different face until the call ups (Exactly right hyperRevue)

Dude looks like Heat Miser.
**Shouldn't his name be spelled "Willy?"** You'd think his name would have absorbed at least one of his many Ks...
I'll be happy when Pena's gone. What a waste.

And if Wily Mo shines elsewhere, Sox fans will be regaled with a loud and obnoxious round of "let another one get away, didn't you?"
