Texans looking at new punter

The reasons Matt Turk is in the Texans' camp are twofold: Chad Stanley is coming off his most erratic season in Houston, which told the Texans to keep their options open, and Turk miscalculated his leverage in his contract talks with the St. Louis Rams.

Chad Stanley can occasionally pin an opponent deep but when we need a 50-60 yard boot he is not there. man with the looks of Turk, I would hate to have him hit you too. Any Non-Texans fans looking at this blog, look out we are a coming!!!!

August 9, 2007  09:16 AM ET

coming where? To the Draft Lottery?

August 9, 2007  09:20 AM ET

you know your team is staring down the barrel of a bad season, when one of top discussions coming out of the training camp is about a punter

August 9, 2007  09:36 AM ET

I know nothing about Turk, but Stanley was not getting it done last year.

Yeah but we could still kick the crap out of any team in canada. Never forget, you hosers are still the minors.

pw: I know right? we could have so few problems that we need to discuss our quarterback's dog fighting, or a DB's stripper habits. Not really. For all the changes, its actually shaping up pretty nicely. Yeah, I'm a homer, drunk, whatever. 10-6 this year.

This is all pieces to the puzzle.......We are looking at all positions that need some tunning and punting is a very important one... We are gearing up for a great season!! Just sit back and watch!!!!!

August 9, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Yeah, man, punters.

They're key.

If the offence can't get it past the fifty, he's your main man.

August 9, 2007  10:17 AM ET

In football every position is key!! Don't hate...just watch!!

August 9, 2007  11:44 AM ET

A punter is needed, but like the long-snapper, not much headlines usually. Hey, I'd be a punter to make league minimum and wear optimist pads.

August 9, 2007  11:53 AM ET

I don't know if he is good. But take this into consideration......This is for my Boi Chaz....

The Bears have a Secret Weapon that no one talks about that helps thier Defense so much. Its Punter Brad Maynard.....I am not joking either.

Football- Going all the way down to the basics....Its all about Field Position. In the NFL the teams that score over 20pts a game is a great team.

Great Punters that can kick the ball High, Deep, and Accurate force the ball inside the 20 or make a Return man fair catch the ball. Football is truly a Game of Inches. If you have a great punter......and a Good Defense....You can win the field position.

As far as Turk goes......His numbers aren't at the Top of the list, but he did play for the Dolphins and they did a good job keeping there opponents on the other side of the 50, which means better position for the offense. Just looking at the bigger picture.

August 9, 2007  12:50 PM ET

i'd be more worried about the unproven starting qb or the injury prone rb, or the lack of depth on the O-line. but you can skip those 3 concerns, and just focus on a good punter...

August 9, 2007  01:00 PM ET

Thanks AL. Stanley really boned quite a few kicks. He used to be MR. Coffin Corner, but the last two years, I dunno. He just started sucking.

August 9, 2007  02:18 PM ET

For anybody who doesn't think the kicking game is important look no further than the Super Bowl the Carolina lost to the Pats(XXXVIII). Right after the Panthers tied the game up with just about a minute to go John Kasay kicked the ensuing kickoff OUT OF BOUNDS giving the Pats the ball at their own 40! Of course a few plays later Vinatieri was kicking the game winning field goal. If the KICKER had simply kept the ball in bounds the game would have probably gone to OT, and then who knows what would have happened.

August 9, 2007  02:38 PM ET

I know what would have happened, KING OF SPORTS.

August 9, 2007  02:46 PM ET

hey a punter is important for the texans because they have to use one on almost every drive unless they turn it over

August 9, 2007  02:49 PM ET

i will enjoy watching another losing season by the texans

August 9, 2007  03:41 PM ET

Thats pretty bitter sounding. Does last years loss to such a bad team still hurt?

August 9, 2007  03:46 PM ET

First a long snapper story than a punter story. Where is Pacman, Tank and #7 when you need them.

August 9, 2007  05:03 PM ET

Hey Colts Fan/s we are gunning for you when was the last time you beat us? When was the last time you lost, I think it was at our House, if you can't stop RON you won't stop Ahman!!

For all the Schaub haters we were the 5th team to make Atlanta an offer for Schuab, yeah all 5 of us were wrong, you will see.

Ahman has had on major injury in a 7 year career, what running back hasn't???

We will go 10-6 in 2007 and only get better next year with an extra 40 million in cap room, 07 WC 08 DC 09 SB If I need to spell out what that means go ask your Daddy!

August 9, 2007  05:11 PM ET

Yeah right Dbrude. Try 07 #2 pick. 08 #3 pick, and 09 #10 pick. The greatest team in Texans history. How will you contend with no o-line?

August 9, 2007  05:16 PM ET

dbrude!, just because Ron Dayne finally showed people he was worthy in one game, doesn't mean it will happen again.

we play 2ce each year, and it has only happened once......

After that embarassing game, guess what team won the SuperBowl? WITH THAT EXACT SAME DEFENSE RON RAN OVER!

Get over yourself and your one game!

How bout the first game of the season? In week 2? where you only had 3 first downs against the colts via rushing?or the 299 net yards compared to our 515 net yards? GET OVER YOURSELF!

How bout 2005 where we stomped you'se twice?

or 2004 where we stomped you twice?

once again GET OVER YOURSELF!

Miami Dolphins shut out the NE Patriots last year, you think their fans are saying....MOVE OVER NEW ENGLAND...>WE BEAT YOU, NOW WE ARE BETTER!

your an idiot!
