08:46 AM ET 08.12 | It is generally accepted that Alex Rodriguez will opt out of his contract with the Yankees after the season to become a free agent. But his agent, Scott Boras, isn't sure that is necessarily the case. Boras said that he and Rodriguez have an agreement not to discuss his status until after the season. The plan is for Rodriguez to spend a few days in California with Boras to talk it over.

by spending a few days in California to talk it over what really is going on is sex with hookers massive amounts of drugs/alcohol and going to strip clubs.

Alex is nuts if he is considering returning to New York! If everything goes perfectly, he returns, hits 800 homers and wins 3 or 4 world series titles and is still like the 20th most popular player in the vast Yankees pantheon. Of course, this wont happen (except maybe the 800 homers). What will happen is that the next time (and every time) Alex gets into a slump, he will be booed by the Bronx faithful, because he isn't Derek Jeter. On the other hand, if he signs with the Red Sox or the Angels or the Braves, he might get the titles and the homers and the love!!! When was the last time you heard Big Papi booed in Boston? Chipper in Atlanta? Vlad in Anaheim? What? Never? Money isnt everything, especially when you are already worth half a million dollars. Go where you will be a perennial contender AND be appreciated!

oops excuse me, of course I meant half a BILLION dollars....my bad...

August 12, 2007  11:42 AM ET

AROD is going to ANAHEIM, end of story

August 12, 2007  12:12 PM ET

a rod is coming to atlanta to play short and edgar will be traded for starting pitching. with chipper texiera and a rod who will beat the braves

August 12, 2007  12:47 PM ET

I agree with the beast: Wait until the season is over. But, it's supposedly a free country so if you want to spend time dreaming about Alex Rodriguez being on your team next year have at it.

August 12, 2007  01:05 PM ET

we need him back

August 12, 2007  01:54 PM ET

A-Rod will stay with the yanks now and I'll explain why:

1. The yanks have more money. You may be forgetting who the yankees are with their recent trades of Johnson and Sheff for kids, and then not buying texiera at the deadline, but the fact remains, if the yanks get in a bidding war, they'll win. And they will get into a bidding war over A-Rod, who they need.

2. Boras loves money. If the yanks can give him money, A-Rod stays.

3. The yanks have a headstart financially over every other team, like they need it. Remember the Rangers? They've been footing a sizeable portion of A-Rod's bill every year. All that money that they would owe the yanks for the next three years if A-Rod opted out, the yanks can turn around and spend on... A-Rod.

No way are the angels getting him. Absolutely no way. And you're dreaming if you think the braves want to get in a bidding war with the yanks. Yeah, they would be unbeatable with A-Rod, but lets leave fantasys to MLB 2k7, where you can force the computer yanks to trade A-Rod to you.

Peter Magowan once pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Of course, he didn't have that hefty mortgage payment on a ball park....

August 12, 2007  03:38 PM ET

You probably think I'm a pudding-specked cheese whipper.

August 12, 2007  07:48 PM ET

I read somewhere that A-Rod gets a "reward" in the form of $5 mil per if he doesn't opt out. If that's true then other teams would have to indicate to Boras that they're willing to go to $30 mil + before he even thinks of opting out. But then that would be tampering, wouldn't it.
Supposedly the Yanks have already offerred that since they and the Rangers are on the hook for it anyway.

August 12, 2007  07:52 PM ET

I dunno if this is possible, but what should happen is he signs an extension with the yankees. He is owed 30MM over the next couple seasons and the yanks share that with the rangers. The yankees could afford to offer add another 5 yr 112-125 MM extension on top of that. This arod gets his money and yanks get their discount (rangers continue to pay partially) and save face. Arod wants to stay here. Who is rich, relatively young, and successful and then LEAVES nyc? NOBODY.

August 12, 2007  08:07 PM ET

a 5yr extension is going to be more like 175 mil, but I'm sure the Yanks will do it. They may even want to add an extra yr or two to make sure he breaks the HR in a Yankee uniform.

August 12, 2007  09:21 PM ET

He has an ego. He deserves to. He wants to be remembered as one of the greats. It is one think to be considered one of the greatest players. It is another to be considered one of the greatest players iwho wore pin stripes. This year the fans in NY have embraced him because he hasn't just produced, he produced when needed. Also, if you look at the Yankees, they are the team of the furture as strange as that sounds. The pitching rotation has an influx of some major, very young talent. Cano, Cabrera are young stars that are not going anywhere. The Yanks future is bright... this was the rebuilding year as scary as that may be to the AL East.

August 13, 2007  12:37 AM ET

How can the Yankees be "rebuilding" when they out spend the average MLB payroll by 115 million (130%) and their closest rival by more than $50 mill? and I am not so hot on their future either. Cano is a good player, but not exactly a francise cornerstone. And Cabrera? are you kidding me? In every other position they are getting old fast. Hughes is promosing, but lets not forget Anibal Sanchez pitched a no-hitter last year and disappeared, not to mention the endless list of pitchers making their MLB debut in their early 20s with arm trouble such as Liriano

August 13, 2007  07:43 AM ET

"This year the fans in NY have embraced him because he hasn't just produced, he produced when needed." That is what I love about Yankee fans...no NY fans in general. "What have you done for me lately" So are you saying FOREVERNY that if A-Rod doesn't continue to hit homeruns when/if they make the playoffs that he will once again be booed (not embraced) and ridiculed? Because to me that would be not only a shame but typical of Yankee fans. Forget the fact that if it wasn't for his bat throughout the the season you guys woudn't be as close to the playoffs that you are but the fans will turn on him once again if he doesn't keep up the offensive numbers? Be honest, lets say the Yankees make the playoffs and are eliminated in the first series and A-Rod goes 2 for 16 with 2 singles, 8 strike outs and hits into 3 double plays, Yankee fans still going to embrace him or boo him? Be honest.

August 13, 2007  08:06 AM ET

Listen to JFKJR: this isn't about the Yankees, this isn't about A-Rod. It's about Scott Boras.

August 13, 2007  10:15 AM ET

Perhaps while in CA, he can roll over to Hef's and spend some time in the "pleather room". Everything is wash 'n' wear.
