QB picks Rutgers over SEC powers

The two verbal commitments Rutgers received Friday night are yet another indicator that coach Greg Schiano's national influence is a legitimate threat to established contenders. Jefferson, the No. 9 quarterback recruit in his class according to Scout.com, is a highly touted Florida quarterback who was also pursued by SEC powers Tennessee, Auburn and LSU. He visited many schools but immediately felt comfortable at Rutgers, noting that he didn't get to talk to very many players because he was too busy, but could sense deep down that something about the school was just right for him.

I'll be damned......A new jersey school raiding the south for Players.......I guess it all comes full circle eventually.

Way to to Schiano!!!

Now just keep the talent in state.

It's called playing time. Plus Rutgers is an up & rising schoool whereas if he went to a SEC power-school he might have to wait until his junior or senior season & might never play b/c of injury or b/c they sign a star freshman stud. Whereas this is less likely @ Rutgers. Rutgers showed they are primed for success after last season. Here's to them being able to continue to run the ball w/ Ray Rice minus "Mr Do Everything" Brian Leonard.

Rutgers is for real. It took 120 years, but it happened.

He will have a better chance playing at Rutgers, I know LSU is stacked on QB's and Florida is too.

August 13, 2007  12:32 PM ET

Greg Schiano is becoming the pied piper of the talented southeast of the country. Amazing.

August 13, 2007  12:39 PM ET

it has to be the playing time... i mean, seriously, i don't see rutgers being a repeat. i don't think they can handle the hype of being a top team. i see them blowing the season. i hope not, cause i always root for the underdawg, but seriously, i think they get spanked this season...

August 13, 2007  02:52 PM ET

Hope he enjoys the area because he won't enjoy all the losses.

August 13, 2007  03:01 PM ET

Rutgers has a great program. They won't get spanked. Their running game is great and they play as a team. Schiano has got the players to buy into his system and it works. They didn't lose too much talent last year either.

August 13, 2007  03:43 PM ET

i think they have tremendous facilities, and will be decent for the next 5-10 years... If you want to get PT and be apart of a program on the rise, its an easy sale. They have a good coach to go along w/ the deal.

August 13, 2007  03:44 PM ET

Spanked by who???? Have you seen their schedule??? 9 wins plus a bowl game at a minimum for Rutgers.

And I love how all the SEC fans are downplaying this. Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, Jefferson picked Rutgers because he liked the coaching staff and facilities better than the SEC schools that were interested???

It's not the same old Rutgers, boys and girls. And Auburn will get a taste of how tough the Big East really is when they take on the 4th best team in the conference, South Florida.

August 13, 2007  03:50 PM ET

Mandfense, have you been smoking? Auburn lose to South Florida hahaha. Rutgers will be good in their confrence I give you that, but thats nos saying much. Washington State, Arizona, Iowa State could all be better than Rutgers in that confrence.

This means nothing until the fax arrives on signing day.

August 13, 2007  05:07 PM ET

Rutgers is for real... He's signing all top prospects... Powerhouse in the future...

August 13, 2007  07:03 PM ET

Its Amazing. Rutgers has 1 good year and they think theyre the '95 Huskers!! I predict they go 7-5 and play Vandy in the weedeater Bowl

August 13, 2007  07:47 PM ET

Damn, now the hate begins. I'm not a big Rutgers fan but I'm happy for them. I hope that they do continue to do big things in college football. They're fans are amazing and they seem to have a great coaching staff.

August 14, 2007  08:17 AM ET

The hating is strange. The Rutgers story is a good one. It gets an area of the country involved that has been a non factor for a long time. There are a lot of people in the NJ area that are paying more attention to football now. The Empire State Building was lit up red in their honor. It's fun!

August 14, 2007  10:58 AM ET

I enjoyed watching Rutgers last season, but I doubt they have the Sneak factor. Everyone that they play will not take them for granted.

August 14, 2007  11:15 AM ET

Hating is the overwhelming theme on these boards.. people hate their crappy lives so they criticize everyone and everything else

August 14, 2007  03:21 PM ET

were not hating, were just being realistic.

I love the Rutgers story, but you can't overrate them after one good year. They aren't USC or LSU or someone like that. They had an excellent year last year and I was happy for them, but they won't last, and even if they do they are in the Big East or the decent 3 with L'ville and W.Va.
