Seminoles QB considered transfer

Florida State redshirt junior QB Xavier Lee, who is competing with classmate Drew Weatherford for that position, said Sunday that he was "very close" to transferring after the 2006 season. "If coach [Jimbo] Fisher wasn't here, I wouldn't be here," said Lee, who had grown impatient under the direction of former quarterback coach Darryl Dickey and offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden.

He should....

Report Offensive CommentWhy couldn't FSU run their offense similar to what Florida did on its 2 QB system where when they needed a guaranteed 1st down Tebow came in, in this role Lee could come in & be this guy??

Report Offensive CommentTransfer to a D-II school and play now. Rhett Bomar from Oklahoma did....not that had much of a choice.

Report Offensive CommentLee and Weatherford both have avg talent.......but Bowden should have given Lee more than a couple of chances. i watched too many games where Bowden just let Weatherford stay out there and screw up, looking like the second coming of Rix.....all the while, Lee sat the bench....let's hope Jimbo can put some life back into the offense....pretty sure that Trickett has improved the O line.

Report Offensive CommentLee should be starting over Weatherford anyways, I like what he brings to the table

Report Offensive CommentTP24, neither QB has played to their potential, but I'll tell you right now, Xavier Lee has talent that is WAY above average. Like I said, he hasn't lived up to it, yet, but he has MAJOR skills. I know that people will argue or maybe even laugh about this, but Xavier Lee has all the tools that Tim Tebow has, and then some. Believe it.

Report Offensive CommentLEE baby.. put him in the game! Weatherford.. man, he's had more than an opportunity. Put Lee in, give him time to collect some bumps and bruises, and he'll figure it out... he gives you the best chance to win.

Report Offensive CommentIf he loses the job to Weatherford he should transfer. If it was up to me, I'd play Lee because Weatherford has had more than enough time to prove himself, and he has not.

Report Offensive CommenteyesWIDEopen, i'm sure Lee does have skills.....but no 'Noles fans have ever seen them in full form and that is unfortunate to say the least......I think Lee should have transferred anyway, just to go somewhere that he can take GAME snaps on a regular basis, not just practice snaps.

Report Offensive CommentEither way we have a decent QB starting...they "were" horribly coached and Jimbo will fix that. It may not take a couple days, we may be looking at weeks or months here, but we are in good shape.
Also, Jimbo has already said that he plans on using both if it takes advantage of the opposing D's weaknesses. Look for both to get some serious playing time early in the season.
lendaleusc06...The reason FSU did not do what Florida did is because FSU does not have a FB listed on their depth chart at QB. I don't know how many of you know this, but Tebow is so strong he works out with the Lineman. I saw him in a Gunsville restaurant a couple of months ago and that dude is pretty damn big!

Report Offensive CommentCall me crazy, but...
Watching the way Weatherford and Lee -- two guys who obviously have talent -- have deteriorated under the poor coaching of Dickey and J. Bowden, it makes me wonder what Rix could've been under a decent offensive staff. His decision-making and maturity were lacking at times, but he made up for it with intensity and fearlessness, and was, I hate to say, more fun to watch.

Report Offensive CommentRix wasn't afraid to scramble and he was actually good at it; he has a more athletic build than Weatherford.....and a stronger arm when he rolled out to the left. Lee also throws better on the run.....Weatherford does not exactly have quick feet, just good football instincts.
ATLfan15 | 08/13/07, 07:34 PM
Report Offensive CommentAgreed, TP.....I'd also say that Lee plays with more confidence than Weatherford, although niether of them really excels in that department (again, probably a function of coaching).
Weatherford also has a tendency to sometimes hold onto the ball too long, like Rix early in his career (the difference being that Weatherford knows to throw it away or take the sack rather than try to force something).

Report Offensive CommentYou saw what Jimbo did for JaMarcus Russell.... Lee fits that mold.
powersj13 BS | 08/14/07, 04:39 PM
Report Offensive CommentPowersj 13....other than the Notre Dame game (which won Russell the top pick in the draft) what did Jimbo do for Russell? Russell wasn't even the clear cut starter heading into last season! I guess it was all those SEC championships.....oh wait they didn't win any. I guess it was all those national championships....oh wait, they didn't win any of those either.
KardiacKid | 08/15/07, 08:49 AM
Report Offensive CommentRussell won the SEC player of the week 4 times, SEC player of the year, 1st team ALL-SEC, Manning Award, Davey O-Brien Award semi-finalist, and Sugar Bowl MVP.... oh yea, and he went 1st in the draft. So, I doubt it was the ND game that made him a top draft pick. Maybe it's his uncanny size, strength, and ability.
If you think college coaches don't help mold players into top draft picks, you don't know anything about football. I don't care if Russell was 8th string going into last year, he did start and you see where that got him... WITH the help of Jimbo.
powersj13 BS | 08/15/07, 08:59 AM
Report Offensive CommentHow many ACC chamiponships did Clemson win? NC's? Oh wait, they didn't win any...Guess that means Gaines Adams shouldn't have been taken before Jarvis Moss... since Moss has a ring.

Report Offensive Commentdamn i dont even know where to start with this. Weatherford def. has average talent. anyone who states otherwise should retire from discussing sports. Lee has quite possibly been the biggest bust in florida high school football history as he set every career passing record in the state. I read in the paper that the coaches are favoring weatherford. Personally, I want to see Lee, but it looks like he is doing the same ole **** in practice. There was a game last season where he threw a deep ball and it went about 90 yards high in the air. Most ridiculous throw ive ever seen (not a good ridiculous either).
i second powers assesment of the russell situation. thats not the only qb jimbo developed either
RBM, there was something bad wrong with RIx mentally. So he would have sucked under any coaching staff. Ive never seen a guy start out with a solid freshman year, and get worse every single year. Now he is where he belongs, on the sidelines reporting

Report Offensive CommentI was at the Maryland game last year where we had like 500 yards offense due to being creative with Lee. What did they do the very next game? SHOTGUN, shotgun, shotgun. It was like they sat down and said, "ok guys we were really succesful with all the creative things we did with Lee in the last game, so let's go right back to the style of play that got us nowhere!"
