Donaghy implies other refs biased

Tim Donaghy cast a cloud over all referees when he said in federal court that one of his betting tips to gamblers centered on referees' relationships with certain NBA players. By acknowledging he used referees' identities as a handicapping tool, Donaghy implied NBA officials show favoritism to some teams and players - a widely held theory that has sullied the league's image. The NBA's Referees Association was quick to release a statement after Donaghy's court appearance to dispute the integrity issue.

This is news? He wants to implicate other people on his way down the proverbial crapper? WAIT...let me get my shocked face on..

August 16, 2007  09:26 AM ET

David Stern knows there are other refs involved and probably hisself. NBA sucks right now and all championships after Jordan's Retirement are tainted.

August 16, 2007  09:28 AM ET

ROCK ON TyBk....now THAT is TRUTHFUL

August 16, 2007  09:28 AM ET

This needs to be made a big deal. I'm tired of referees with vendettas or personal dislikes against players not calling obvious fouls

August 16, 2007  09:30 AM ET

After Jordan are tainted? No player has been loved by the Refs more then Mike... I love Jordan, and he is by far the greatest player of all times, but your statement is insane... Do you remember his last shot? He grabs Bran Russel by the A-S-S and pushes him to the floor to hit his game winner?? Favoritism towards players is in every sport, and using Jordan as an anti example is ignorant

August 16, 2007  09:39 AM ET

This is nothing new people..we've all watched the games...we've all seen it happen. Refs are biased...it all depends on how mush a** kissing the players do.

Take Rasheed Wallace and Ron Artest...every ref in the league hates those guys because they're just a**holes sometimes, they don't take **** from anyone. Then you have Steve Nash, who is as sweet as pie, go to the ref with a sad puppy dog face. How can refs not like that?

August 16, 2007  09:48 AM ET

Well, I hate the idea of biased refs. However, NBA players should treat playing like a job, which means working to get every advantage they can. So the guys that are complete ****.s. should probably take notice of this. I'm afraid they will, by pointing at it and saying, "See, I knew they were out to get me." But if they took a different approach and said, "Well, I guess I kiss a.s.s for 40 minutes, 82 times a year...lets see, that is 3280 minutes of buttkissing in a season. Comes out to 55 hours of pretending to be a nice guy. In a year!! 55 hours. C'mon guys, take a little pride in your work. If Joey Crawford wants a han.d.job, give it to him. It just makes you a consummate pro.

August 16, 2007  09:49 AM ET

Okay, did anyone get the "consummate" joke? Or am I reaching there?

Referees notoriously call fouls based upon player reputation. I wouldn't call it a relationship with the player, per se. But someone like Tim Duncan is going to get better calls than someone like, say, a first round pick playing center his rookie season. I find that to be natural, just as in baseball, when a veteran pitcher will routinely get a call that a rookie hitter finds displeasing. Got to earn your stripes, in a sense.

Donaghy, by implying he used these 'relationships' in his strategy, is basically just implying that he broke the unwritten rule of trust between officials. I dont necessarily see it as an indictment upon other officials.

August 16, 2007  10:03 AM ET

AcesFullMoon I got it...too funny but I agree...do what you gotta do.

Gator Rican...you're right, that may have just been a shot at him but it's also a perfect example of how refs can be biased. Tim Duncan is probably one of the most respectful players in the league so Crawford must really dislike him to wantto fight him.

I doubt there will be any other indictments of NBA refs...you can't prove bias unless it is spoken or written.

August 16, 2007  10:18 AM ET

Tainted is the only word.

August 16, 2007  10:36 AM ET

Tybek,

you make no sense. How is every championship after Jordan tainted? Are you a bulls fan? The San Antonio Spurs get the lowest ratings in NBA history when they play in the finals. If there was a real bias wouldn't the league want someone else in the finals . . . . . .Get a life man.

August 16, 2007  10:57 AM ET

Oh come on...cut out the tainted crap. The refs can only control so much...it's up to the teams to determine who wins.

August 16, 2007  11:33 AM ET

If a true bias existed the Knicks would get the #1 pick every 15 years when a franchise center comes around, the Lakers would be in the finals every other year, and they would be (shock!) playing the Knicks or Bulls.

August 16, 2007  11:38 AM ET

True, true moondizzle...

I do like the fact that the league is becoming more "wide-open". There are more than a few teams in each conference that can get to the finals. It just depends on who wants it more.

August 16, 2007  11:41 AM ET

THe big stars get a lot of help even when they don't need it. MJ was one of the worst. He threw a ball one time and bounced it off of Mark Jackson's head and got a tech. Shawn Bradley threw the ball and bounced it off of someone's back and got a double tech and thrown out of the game. These incidents occurred within weeks of each other. I couldn't believe it. I hope this will even the scales a little for the guys that aren't big stars.

August 16, 2007  11:45 AM ET

What does he expect, a kiss on the cheek and a pat on the butt?

August 16, 2007  01:01 PM ET

Moondizzle

Isn't this a form of corruption? If the correct call isn't made because the call goes against a "superstar"? Even the announcers talk about a "veteran call" when the first year player flops, but it the situation is reversed then a charge is called againt the first year player....I can't wait till the rinse cycle!

August 16, 2007  01:04 PM ET

Was "The Jordan" effect corrupt? I don't think so. It was simply the logical result of believing his airness could do no wrong. I didn't like it, but it was not corrupt. In other cases I can't be so sure.
