Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who pleaded guilty to gambling-related charges in federal court Wednesday, may also face charges in Maricopa County if investigations by the basketball league or the FBI reveal that he deliberately miscalled two Phoenix Suns playoff games earlier this year. Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas on Wednesday sent letters to NBA Commissioner David Stern and to the head of the FBI in Washington, DC, asking that his office be given any and all information about Donaghy's handling of the two Suns games that he officiated. Thomas wants to know whether Donaghy gambled on the games, provided inside information to gamblers or helped determine the outcome by making bad officiating calls.

Yeah? Well people in hell want icewater....!!!!!!!

August 16, 2007  09:41 AM ET

Oh please...give me a break...just another ploy by the Suns to make people think they actually could've won the championship last year.

August 16, 2007  10:47 AM ET

Yea, this really accomplishes nothing if your a suns fan...other than more aggravation.

August 16, 2007  11:02 AM ET

So how many people are actually gonnna go back and watch the suns' playoff games again?LOL- they were actually close - i feel you on that suns ploy thing Jesse but u gotta admit that every year the suns get done wrong by some random occurrence every year.
In the end tho i do agree- the Suns need to stop pretending and get some real big men who can help Amare

That's a cop out for the Suns. The suspensions last year were warranted...they did come off the bench towards the "altercation". Steve Nash gave a great performance on the floor that caused the entire thing...how did they get done wrong again?

What happened the year before and the year before that? They just need to step up and get over the hump. They're a great team but they need to improve on defense if they want to win a championship.

August 16, 2007  11:57 AM ET

When I heard this, I was sickened. This is the culture that we have created- sue everyone for anything. Obviously there is not a lawsuit here, but the launching of an investigation is the same thing in a different costume. I'm a Suns fan and hate the fact that they lost to the cheap shot of Horry and thus had their chances altered, but this is NOT the way to go about correcting those issues. Winning games is the only way to solve it. That's it.

August 16, 2007  12:04 PM ET

Let's not get on the Horry "cheap shot" bandwagon. What Horry did was what any veteran player would do in a do or die "stop the fast break" situation. He didn't hit him very hard. I love Steve Nash as a player but he sure brought out his acting skills on that one.

Not to mention that the series is a 7-game series. 1 or 2 games doesn't end your chances. They lost to a better team. This "investigaton" is just plain stupid.

August 16, 2007  12:23 PM ET

As a Suns fan I want to just get past the whole series with SA. It was so screwed up on so many levels. From the suspensions to the whining and now you add in this travesty. Donaghy betting on this game certainly explains all the crappy calls he made in this game and there were a few that were absolutely absurd if you go back and watch it again. But really we need to stop worrying about percieved slights from last year and Man Up for TD this year. Amare need to play D as physically as he plays on the offensive end.

You're right in the sense that you just have to move on and come in this year with a chip on your shoulder. These excuses only give the team stuff to complain about. What's done is done. You lost a 7 game series, period!

August 16, 2007  12:41 PM ET

The purpose of this isn't to take the rings away from San An and give them to phoenix, but they need to find out whether or not they've been putting out a tainted product. Apparantly there's more than one issue with more than one ref and they have to get to the bottom of it. But to defend the suns, both Duncan and Parker ran off the bench and then back on earlier in the game because of a hard foul and there was nothing done. Either suspend them all or none of them. THAT's the issue.

August 16, 2007  12:42 PM ET

Here we go again...you Suns fans will just never stop complaining about everything. Everything you lose is tainted. Come on...move on!

August 16, 2007  02:06 PM ET

The Horry shoulder tackle was hardly unintentional, and it was done deliberately since the game was already out of reach for the Spurs. I think that's pretty clear at this point. Steve Nash may have over-dramatized the hit, but it was hardly light especially coming from someone of Horry's size. Enough about that.

Despite the series being seven games, one or two games can greatly affect your chances. Look at where those games fell: right in the middle of the series. Pivotal players from the Suns were kept out due to their own negligence, and that affected the outcome of the series undoubtedly. True, they MAY have lost to a better team; expecting the outcome to remain as it were is pretty speculative and fairly unrealistic. I think the Suns surely had a chance of winning the game affected by the suspension and carry that momentum to win the following game.

Still, this whole investigation stuff is unnecessary and ridiculous.

August 16, 2007  02:25 PM ET

Whatever! Again, what happened teh years before? The Suns are defficient on defense and that's the only reason they haven't been able to make it to the finals already. Stop blaming everyone else. Play some defense!

The Spurs and the Mavs are still in a different league than the Suns. You have a great team but you're missing a component or two.

August 16, 2007  02:32 PM ET

nash gets upset when horry bumps him and does nothing when his nose is smashed?! Nash should be investigated he provoked the entire thing, that got 2 of his teamates suspended..flame on

August 16, 2007  02:48 PM ET

I can see where this is headed.. Please allow me to put on my waders...

*waders on*

The Suns are a bit porous on defense, yes; blaming someone else? Hardly. it is rather comical that you, Jesse, of all people, would defend the Spurs for their thuggery. Aren't you a Lakers fan or just an Horry fan in general? Or, do I have you wrong all together? It just seems odd that a Lakers fan would have anything good to say about a fellow conference rival. I don't mind hard nose play in the least, but that hit from horry definitely crossed the line.

The Spurs, Suns, and Mavs are all in the same league but use different approaches to accomplish the same goal. San Antonio does it with defense; Dallas with a fairly well rounded scheme (excluding play against GS), and Phoenix with speed and scoring. The main disadvantage facing the Suns? A cheapwad owner who refuses to go over the cap to acquire game changing talent to win. The Spurs and Mavs obviously arent' affected by this.

No excuses here. The Suns need to show more grit and resolve. End of story.

August 16, 2007  02:57 PM ET

Donny: Umm.. last time I checked, it was Nash that went into the scorer's table from an Horry shoulder block, not the other way around. The headbutt incident was inadvertent contact and nothing more. Considering it to be anything else is just plain stupid. I really hope that you're being sarcastic. Seriously.

August 16, 2007  02:57 PM ET

What happens if they find out the ref did alter the outcome of a game?? Nothing.. The league cant let that happen, and im sure if the suns were smart, they would stop the "investigation".. something like this would just be more bad press for the league..

I for one am kinda tired of the NBA right now.. there is no parody anymore..

August 16, 2007  03:03 PM ET

I think you meant parity in terms of equal, not parody like comedy... or so I think. There's plenty of comedy in the league. Look no further than Tim Duncan being challenged to a fight by Joey Crawford. LMAO

August 16, 2007  03:23 PM ET

Hey Skybill.. you definitely have me all wrong. I am first a fan of great basketball, then a fan of the Lakers. I appreciate watching all great teams succeed. The Spurs are a consistent force to be reckoned with and whether Horry plays or not makes absolutely no difference.

The Suns are also a great run and gun team that is very fun to watch. They do not play fundamental basketball which focuses on defense. They're all about the big dunks and the 100 3-pointers they take/make. Aside from all the whining, that is their biggest problem.

I'm not saying that Horry's shot was called for but it wasn't as hard as Nash made it look. Stoudamire and Diaw came off the bench and ran towards the "altercation" in plain view of the cameras (stupid or what?).

Earlier in that game, the Spurs players got up from the bench and ran to help their teammate off the floor after a hard foul. There was never an "altercation" there. Clear now? How much clearer can that get?

If you're going to move beyond your past failures, you really just ahve to stop whining...suck it up and go out there and play.

August 16, 2007  03:46 PM ET

I wasn't questioning your love for the game; mine is very similar. I can also appreciate the calculated efficiency of the Spurs. They win, and there's no denying that fact.

I was not the one who made mention of Duncan/Bowen leaving their bench earlier in the game. I do believe that something should have been done to handle players coming on the court (technical, etc.), but I don't think an ejection of either would have been necessary unless something had escalated further.

The Suns need to cut the throats of the Spurs and leave them to die. That's the bottom line. No exceptions. Play to win.
