Red Bulls turf may sideline Becks
The Red Bulls have sold 55,000 tickets for Saturday's Galaxy game, up from around the 10,000 they normally average. It still is uncertain if the crowd will get what it paid for, because David Beckham is not sure he will try out his achy ankle on the field turf of Giants Stadium. He has publicly spoken out against field turf, saying soccer was meant to be played on grass.

Here we go again! The Galaxie need to let this guy heal! They keep making fans believe that this guy is 100% and they are all going and buying tickets to see him and than he decides that he might not want to play becouse of his injurie and becouse is a turf surface. Did Beckham not know that some US teams had turf in their stadiums before his came to America?? So what's next, the air is different here so he can't breathe as well as he did before?? This is starting to become a huge dissapointment!

Old-guard players just need to quit whining and get used to artificial grass. FIFA itself has already emphatically made it clear that artificial turf is the future.
As for claims that it causes injuries, I believe such claims to be *greatly* exaggerated by paranoia and the hyper-sensitivity it creates. To hear the complaints of some of these players and coaches, you'd think pro footballers are delicate flowers and have ankles and knees as robust as chalk, and that artificial grass must be as hard as concrete.
Artificial grass can be and is made to be just as cushioning as real earth and grass. I will concede that artificial grass may have a different effect on ball movement (and that's just something one would have to get used to), but beyond that, I call bunk on the lamentations about it directly causing injuries.

I'm sure he'll play some, but if the turf is bothering the ankle too much I wouldn't be surprised to see him only get in 30-45 minutes of work. He's still not as match fit as he needs to be even without the ankle injury.

Hey, if he doesn't like the fake grass at the Meadowlands, let him play on the old-style AstroTurf??? like they did in the 1970s. That stuff sucked for soccer (especially on a crowned field)!!!!
I can guarantee you if he played on that, it'd be more than his ankle that would be sore.

becks knows he has to show up in NYC to play. it would be foolish not to. this isnt dallas where he could get away with not showing up. he will suck it up and play...probably not the full 90...but some substantial time.
plus this turf stuff is the way footie is going. look at the U21 world cup, a lot of stadiums had it and FIFA now approves of the surface. i dont think youll see it in the senior cup any time soon, but it wouldnt surprise me if more leagues used it in the future. it cant be any worse than the mud pitches some of these leagues play on.

The red bulls should patch the field with grass so their wouldn't be that many concerns for Beckham to play.

Maybe they can figure a way to grow real grass at the new Giants Stadium. Lord knows when they've tried, it ended up worse than the fieldturf.
(Of course, it would help if they didn't have the field covered for days and days for concerts, etc.....)

RBNY is building a new stadium with a grass field so I doubt if they'll put grass in Giants stadium.

Turf does hurt your knees more.
A properly aerated and watered field is soft.
The natural properties of rubber make it harden over time.

Fieldturf is sine to play on. Our school's soccer field is on fieldturf, and it helps with traction.

The REAL IrishR#1: That's kind of the problem with field turf though, it has too much traction. It's not bad to play on, but since your cleats catch more there's no give there, so it's your ankles or knees that end up giving. It's especially harsh for those who already have had a ankle or knee injury. The never seem to heal as strong as they once were, so they give out that much easier.

First of all, it's the NY Post. 'Nuff said.
Second, unless it's game day and you hear it from the the team, or DB himself, it's just to rile people up and sell papers.
