Why Yankees traded Sheffield

GM Brian Cashman said the Yankees would have retained Gary Sheffield for 2007 if he had agreed to play first base. But Sheffield did not want to move from the outfield to first. So the Yankees dealt him to the Tigers for three young pitchers.

This "why" is buried at the end of the article and is about four lines long but once again it is used as if it is the whole point of the article.
But, also, buried at the very end of the article is this quote from Gary Sheffield:
???What I did you???ll never see done again,??? Sheffield said. ???I was 38 years old and I had just come off not playing the whole year. I got three years on my contract and a raise to do less. You???ll never see that done again.???
Yes, indeed that is something to be proud about Gary. Way to go.

I hate these freaking question marks. where do they come from? The question mark fairy?

August 17, 2007  10:34 AM ET

Gee Sheffield, I bet it was a racist request to ask you to move to first base from the outfield, huh? It must have been since he wasn't asking any of his 'white' outfielders to move to first, right?

August 17, 2007  10:51 AM ET

So, I wonder what EXCUSS, is next?....hahahaha

August 17, 2007  11:28 AM ET

They picked up his option and traded him so that he wouldn't go to the Red Sox. And as much as I hate Sheffield, I'd sure wouldn't mind his OF production on a 1 or 2 year deal over Drew's.

August 17, 2007  11:47 AM ET

True hyper, I agree. That bat is nasty!

August 17, 2007  12:31 PM ET

ONLY WHITEY WOULD DISRESPECT ME ENOUGH TO MOVE ME TO FIRST BASE>>>AND PAY ME 15 million in the process

August 17, 2007  12:38 PM ET

lol truth, if only u werent such a soccer hater

August 17, 2007  12:43 PM ET

oh truth, if only u werent a transexual

August 17, 2007  12:50 PM ET

Manny and Gary on the same team intriguing...but I'm glad it didn't happen just because I have never disrepected Gary the player and I am glad the Sox don't have that bat in their lineup. Imagine the record they would have at this point if he replace Drew that lineup. Another 5 to 10 wins? more? I just don't like Gary the mouth.

August 17, 2007  01:05 PM ET

if Gary Sheffield was white I bet they would have let him pitch or do whatever he wants. Damn racist Yankees. HAHAHAHA.

I wish Sheffield would collide into the outfield wall and get some sense knocked into his dumb race card playing ****.

August 17, 2007  02:03 PM ET

Yankees dont need him. He's a good fit for the Tigers.

August 17, 2007  03:06 PM ET

Sheffield is garbage.

August 17, 2007  03:42 PM ET

I disagree. Sheffield just tells the truth - as he sees it. He may be wrong, but hey, who is perfect?

I regret that the Yankees did not retain him. I would rather have his bat in the lineup behind A-Rod and his glove in right field where "Oh no, is that the wall???" Abreu now squirms.

boo

August 17, 2007  06:55 PM ET

Abreu is a dainty outfielder, boo.

August 17, 2007  07:17 PM ET

I would rather Steinbrenner hadn't killed the deal for Vlad Guerrero that Cashman set up. Vlad's younger, a better all around talent, and not a carcinogen (sp?) in the clubhouse!!

August 17, 2007  11:25 PM ET

How could you let Vlad get away!? That's sad. I don't respefct Sheff the player or his mouth. Abreu is past his prime. A - Rod needs to be traded to a team in which he can finish a season in first place!

The National Spelling Bee is the only event ESPN covers that's not tainted by S-T-E-R-O-I-D-S!

August 17, 2007  11:29 PM ET

Manny, Sheff and Schilling all in the same clubhouse. Now there's a freakshow I'd pay to see. I wonder if "Manny being Manny" fits into Sheff's worldview about Latinos being easy to handle. Or maybe it doesn't count because Manny grew up in New York.

Whew, glad we finally solved that mystery.
