The exodus of players from Leeds continues and American international Eddie Lewis has joined Derby County for an undisclosed fee. Lewis has been brought in by Rams boss Billy Davies, who worked with the player when they were both at Preston, and he will officially complete a move to Pride Park after completing a medical. Stoke City were also interested in the 33-year-old U.S. international but Premier League football was the key to Derby landing the experienced American.

yes, u do not want to be a national team player in league two of english football. (third division if ppl dont know) it's worse than MLS

August 17, 2007  02:40 PM ET

I miss Eddie Lewis. I can't believe he's 33. It'll be great to see him on the wings in Derby

August 17, 2007  03:40 PM ET

MLS is constantly made fun of as a pub league.
I'd like to see the worst team in MLS play the newly promoted teams of the premiership. I think that would prove that MLS can compete.

DC United, Houston, Dallas or Galaxy could play with any team in the premiership. Just look at how many US national team players are on those teams and former national team players(Mr. Lewis).

Derby Derby, the pitcher's name is Nerby.

August 17, 2007  04:16 PM ET

Good for him to leave the sinking ship that is Leeds and play at Derby.

August 17, 2007  04:25 PM ET

DS22, a worse team in MLS will have no shot a promoted premiership team in mid season form. R u crazy? Maybe the MLS cup champion might have a shot against, say, derby, both in midseason form, but your letting ur american ignorance get in the way. You try to believe MLS is a great league. It is a strong league, one that shouldn't be ridiculed, and getting stronger, but nothing compares to the EPL. I highly doubt the Houston Dynamo will have anyshot at Sunderland for example. And the EPL competiton is getting much tighter, so newly promoted teams can be more competitive than you think. The MLS is strong, but if it cant even match the campeanato brasiliero or argetine apetura or clausura, how can it compete with the EPL. R u buying into that Alexi lalas crap?

August 17, 2007  05:56 PM ET

No I don't buy Alexi Lalas's crap.
I believe what he says.

Notice I didn't say the top 5 in the premiership - ManU, Chelsea, Ars, Liverpool, Everton???

England can barely fill out a roster for a game vs Germay

I'm sorry you thikn that much of the EPL.

August 17, 2007  06:01 PM ET

Umm.

Also you can buy a team from the league 2 or 1 for less than an expasion MLS team.

So economic's levels the field.

Plus add Beckham, Blaco, Angel...
Donovan could be a starter in th premiership.
Ditto for what Friedel, and kelller.
Not to mention Hannemen and Howard. How many of these players graduated from MLS and Friedel &keller are't worthy to be a DP

August 17, 2007  06:08 PM ET

eddie can show benny the way in england and help him settle quicker

August 17, 2007  06:42 PM ET

I have to agree with you Jeevs. I'm proud of our infant of a league here in the states, but there's no way the best teams in MLS could hang with the worst EPL or La Liga teams in mid-season form. We're not there yet and that's OK. Instead of comparing MLS to the EPL perhaps we should be comparing it to slightly less prestigious leagues in Europe like the Scottish PL or even the French league. There's no reason for us to hang our heads because our league isn't as good as the EPL or La Liga. It's ridiculous for anyone to expect MLS to be any better than it is at this point, given it's current structure. It may NEVER compare to EPL or La Liga. They had a 100-year head start for crying out loud!!!

Let's just hope the flow of transfers both ways continues. It will be good for everyone. I don't care how old they are as long as they have major game and they bring it with them to MLS.

August 17, 2007  07:51 PM ET

DS22: I get where you are coming from, but honestly, I think the top 2 of MLS could maybe split 50-50 in a season with the bottom 2 of the EPL on any given year. Even if they did lose both it wouldn't be embarrassing like it would have been 10 years ago.
Colaship quality is a more fair comparison.

This move is fine for Eddie, but he has to stay healthy. i don't see him making it back into the Nats picture as a starter though. 36 years old in 2010 simply won't cut it anymore on the USMNT. We have so much young talent coming up now that not many outfield players are gonna be playing in 4 World Cups anymore. 3 will be a miracle and 2 will probably be the norm from now on.

I hope that when Derby gets relegated this year, he comes to the US to help the league here grow some more.

August 17, 2007  08:06 PM ET

who gives a ****? the premier league is the best league in the world. end of story. u are a dumba*ss to think otherwise

August 17, 2007  08:07 PM ET

if u dont want to play there then u have no ambition

August 18, 2007  02:47 AM ET

This is a really good move for Eddie Lewis. Good to see another American in the premiership.

August 18, 2007  12:41 PM ET

Obviously, I'm going to have to disagree with you Penns. La Liga is the better league and you can rant and rave all you want to.

August 20, 2007  03:39 PM ET

cmon DS22 be serious, half of the englisteam is injured, okay. Mls is more expensive than league 1 or 2 and play in huge cities with very good fields, thats why they are more expensive. MLS is no more than a develoment league for americans players so they can go to europe as of right now. Im pretty sure at midseason form, west ham can easily top houston. Notice, the gap betwwen the big clubs is closing. the top team in the prem is man city. man u have two draws and a loss. MLS's quality is no where close to that of the EPL. Obviously when u watch soccer u dont care about the quality of the game.

Haven't seen him play in ages, glad he's coming to the EPL.
